Chapter 8 - A Mother's Desperate Sacrifice in the Rust Belt Underground

Inside the damp, freezing basement of the foundry, Clara sat tied to a rusty
iron chair. Her face was bruised, her lip split, but her eyes blazed with
fierce, maternal defiance.
In the corner of the room, inside a small wooden crate lined with a burlap sack,
three-year-old Sophie was sobbing quietly, clutching a torn piece of her
mother's sweater.
“Mommy... I want to go home... I want Mr. Dominic,” Sophie whimpered softly.
“Shh, baby, look at Mommy,” Clara whispered, fighting through the agonizing pain
in her ribs. “Close your eyes and sing our song, sweetheart. Mr. Dominic is
coming. I promise you, he’s coming.”
Sal Moretti, a ruthless cartel boss with slicked-back hair and a gold-plated
revolver tucked into his belt, walked into the room laughing mockingly.
“Look at this touching family drama,” Moretti sneered, grabbing Clara by her
hair and pulling her head back. “Valente hasn’t shown up. He doesn’t care about
a maid and her little bastard. You threw your life away for a monster who
doesn’t even know your favorite color.”
Clara spat blood directly onto Moretti’s polished leather shoes.
“He may be a monster to you, Moretti,” Clara said, her voice shaking with
venomous pride. “But he has more honor in his shadow than you have in your
entire rotten bloodline. When he gets here, he will feed you to the wolves.”
Moretti’s face twisted in fury. He raised his heavy hand to strike her across
the face.
