Chapter 6 - Dominic's Darkest Confession and the Real Reason She Ran

Dominic didn't give the mercenary a second glance. A single nod to his men was
all it took before he walked back into the rain.
As the convoy sped toward Coatesville, Dominic sat in the back of the SUV,
staring at Sophie’s broken hair clip. Marco sat across from him, cleaning his
weapon.
“You care about her, don’t you, Dominic?” Marco asked quietly. It was the first
time in ten years Marco had used his first name instead of ‘boss.’
Dominic looked up, his jaw clenched. “She was just the housekeeper.”
“A housekeeper doesn't leave a drawing of you as her daughter’s protector,”
Marco said softly. “And a mafia boss doesn't risk a full-scale cartel war for a
domestic worker. You knew who Sophie was, didn't you?”
Dominic closed his eyes as painful memories surged through his mind.
Four years ago, before Clara appeared at his gates, Dominic had spent one
unforgettable, anonymous night with a terrified, beautiful woman who had escaped
a corrupt political family in New York. They had hidden together in a secluded
safehouse during a turf war. Neither had shared their real names. They had found
solace in each other’s arms for twenty-four hours before duty tore them apart.
When Clara arrived at his estate a year later with an infant in her arms,
Dominic had recognized her instantly. But he believed she had come to him purely
by coincidence, seeking work to hide from her dangerous past. He had kept his
distance, convinced that his violent world would destroy her if he ever
acknowledged the truth.
He had stayed silent to protect her. She had stayed silent to protect him.
And all this time, little Sophie had been his own daughter.
“She knew,” Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with immense pain. “She knew I

was the father. She never demanded my empire. She just wanted our child to be
safe under my roof.”
