Chapter 3 - The Ironclad Trap in the White Envelope

The first document on top was not a divorce petition. It was a formal Notice of
Immediate Eviction and Revocation of Residential License, signed by the Chief
Judge of the Fairfield County Superior Court.

Adrian flipped to the second page. His eyes scanned the bold headers:

FORENSIC AUDIT REPORT: COLE & VANCE HOLDINGS
PRELIMINARY FINDING OF UNLAWFUL EMBEZZLEMENT & FORGERY

Attached beneath the audit was a high-resolution photocopy of the Lake Tahoe
loan agreement—complete with the forged signature of Vivian Vance—alongside a
sworn affidavit from the county's leading handwriting expert confirming the
forgery.

Pinned to the back of the file was a personal letter, typed on heavy Vance
Conglomerate letterhead.

Adrian,

When you stood in Aspen and told the world that your marriage to me was an
‘obligation’ and that Celeste was the woman you truly wanted, you made your
choice.

Allow me to clarify the reality of your obligations:

1. This estate was purchased through the Vance Family Living Trust in 1994,
fifteen years before I met you. You have zero equity, zero claim, and zero legal
right of tenancy. You have two hours to remove your personal effects—which have
been neatly placed in three cardboard boxes by the service gate—before the
private armed security team on the perimeter has you arrested for criminal
trespass.

2. Clause 14(B) of our Prenuptial Agreement explicitly states that any act of
publicly documented marital infidelity, coupled with financial misconduct
against the Vance Trust, immediately dissolves all joint asset allocations,
triggers an instant demand for full repayment of all capital injections, and
permanently revokes your voting shares on the Board of Directors.

3. The $10 million you stole using my father's lakefront estate has already been
reported to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and the Federal
Bureau of Investigation. Raymond Sterling is personally overseeing the criminal
referral.

You told the world you didn't want to live in my shadow anymore.

Congratulations, Adrian. You are officially in the sun.

Let's see how well you survive the heat.

— Vivian

"Damn it!" Adrian screamed, his voice cracking as he slammed the papers against
the bare wall. "She's insane! She can't freeze my board shares! She can't touch
my accounts!"

Celeste picked up the dropped papers, her eyes darting across the figures. When
she reached the section detailing the FinCEN report and the immediate asset
freeze, all the color drained from her face.

"Adrian..." Celeste stammered, grabbing his arm with manicured fingers that
suddenly felt icy. "The $10 million... you told me that was your personal annual
bonus! You said the transfer to Grant Creative was completely clean!"

"It was clean!" Adrian snapped, yanking his arm away. "My lawyers set up three
shell companies! There's no way she could have traced it within twelve hours of
waking up from surgery!"

"Well, she did!" Celeste shouted, her voice shrill in the empty room. "Look at
this letter! Raymond Sterling is handling the prosecution! Adrian, Raymond
Sterling put the former governor in federal prison! If my accounts get frozen,
the production run for my fashion line will be canceled! I have orders due in
Paris next week!"

"Shut up! Just shut up and let me think!" Adrian bellowed, his voice echoing
deafeningly off the bare walls.

He pulled out his phone and dialed his personal banker at J.P. Morgan Private
Bank.

"Arthur, it's Adrian Cole," he said rapidly into the receiver. "I need an
immediate wire transfer of $500,000 from my primary operating account to my
secondary checking."

There was a long, excruciating pause on the other end of the line.

"Mr. Cole," the banker’s voice came back, stiff and chillingly formal. "We
received a certified court injunction and an emergency corporate notice from
Vance Conglomerate’s legal counsel twenty minutes ago. Under the terms of the
master trust agreement, your signatory authority on all corporate and linked
private accounts has been suspended pending the forensic audit."

"What? You can't do that! I am the Co-CEO!"

"Mr. Cole, your personal black card has also been deactivated. If you have
inquiries, you will need to direct them to Mr. Raymond Sterling's office. Good
day."

The line clicked dead.

Adrian stared at the phone screen in stunned disbelief.

Outside, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the driveway began to
slowly swing shut, and two black SUVs carrying armed private security officers
rolled up to the curb, their high-beam headlights illuminating the front doors.
