Chapter 10 - Reclaiming the Vance Heritage

Three days later, three black Lincoln Navigators arrived at the gated entrance
of the 40-acre Vance Lakefront Estate in Lake Tahoe.
The rain of New York was replaced by the crisp, golden sunlight of the Sierra
Nevada mountains. The scent of pine and fresh mountain air filled the morning.
Vivian stepped out of the first vehicle. She wore a warm cream-colored cashmere
sweater, dark trousers, and riding boots. Her recovery had progressed remarkably
well; the quiet strength of her Vance bloodline was evident in the firm,
confident stride she took up the stone walkway.
Beside her walked Raymond Sterling, holding a certified deed bearing the golden
seal of the State of Nevada.
"The federal judge signed the emergency release yesterday at 4:00 PM," Raymond
said, handing the document to Vivian. "The fraudulent mortgage has been
permanently expunged from the county registry. The $10 million loan balance has
been legally shifted as personal, non-dischargeable debt onto Adrian Cole and
Celeste Grant individually."
Vivian ran her fingers over the raised gold seal on the deed.
Her father had built this house with his bare hands forty years ago. Every cedar
beam, every stone in the massive living room fireplace had been hand-selected by
Arthur Vance.
To think that Adrian had offered this sanctuary as collateral to finance his
mistress's vanity projects made Vivian's blood boil—but looking at the towering
pines reflecting in the crystal-clear waters of the lake, she felt only a
profound, liberating peace.
"What about the offshore funds?" Vivian asked, turning to Raymond.
"The Department of Justice, working with Swiss and Cayman authorities, executed
a cross-border seizure warrant," Raymond replied, a rare, genuine smile touching
his lips. "They recovered $8.4 million of the embezzled capital. The remaining
$1.6 million that Celeste spent on luxury items, jewelry, and luxury rentals is
being recovered through the court-ordered public auction of her seized assets."
"And Celeste herself?"
"Her fashion label went into involuntary liquidation yesterday. Every major
department store dropped her line. She’s currently living in an extended-stay
motel in Queens, dodging calls from debt collectors and awaiting her formal
arraignment on federal wire fraud charges."
Vivian looked out over the vast, sparkling lake. The water was still as glass,
mirroring the endless blue sky above.
"My father always told me," Vivian said softly, "that a fortress is only as
strong as the people you allow inside its walls. I let a viper into my home,
Raymond."
"And you crushed its head before the poison could spread," Raymond replied
quietly, stepping up beside her on the veranda. "Your father would be immensely
proud of you, Vivian. He always knew you had more iron in your soul than any ten
men on Wall Street."
Vivian looked at Raymond. For the first time in years, she noticed the warmth in
his slate-gray eyes—a warmth that had always been there, steady and protective,
while Adrian had dazzled her with hollow charm and false promises.

"Thank you, Raymond," Vivian whispered. "For everything."
"We're not finished yet, Vivian," Raymond said gently, his expression turning
resolute. "Tomorrow is the global press conference. It's time to show the world
the full truth."
