Chapter 13 - Handcuffs and Treason

The following Tuesday, the grand rotunda of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United
States Courthouse was swarming with federal marshals and news crews.

Celeste Grant was the first to be escorted through the metal detectors.

Her glamorous lifestyle was completely eradicated. She was dressed in a drab,
oversized navy prison jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed in front of her waist and
attached to a heavy steel belly chain. Her roots had grown out dark and unkempt,
and her face was devoid of makeup, looking hollow and haggard.

As she was led toward the courtroom, she spotted Adrian being brought in through
the adjacent holding corridor, similarly shackled and flanked by two armed
federal officers.

"You bastard!" Celeste shrieked across the marble rotunda, lunging against her
marshals toward Adrian. "You ruined my life! You told me the feds wouldn't touch
us! You told me you had friends in the Treasury!"

"Shut up, you leech!" Adrian screamed back, his shackles rattling violently as
he strained against his guards. "You took ten million dollars of my wife's
money! You were sleeping with your personal trainer while spending my corporate
cash! You're the reason the feds caught the wire transfer!"

"I took a plea deal, Adrian!" Celeste yelled with a hysterical, malicious laugh.
"I gave the prosecutors every single encrypted text message, every forged
document, and every offshore account password you gave me! I'm getting four
years—you're getting twenty!"

"You traitorous bitch!" Adrian roared, his face turning purple with rage before
federal marshals forced him through the courtroom doors.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was solemn and heavy.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery, composed and untouchable, was Vivian
Vance, with Raymond Sterling seated beside her.

United States District Judge Evelyn Thorne adjusted her glasses and looked down
from the bench at Adrian Cole, who stood beside a court-appointed public
defender.

"Mr. Cole," Judge Thorne said, her voice echoing through the wood-paneled room.
"I have reviewed the extensive evidence submitted by the prosecution, including
the detailed forensic audit and the testimony of your co-conspirator. Your
conduct demonstrates a breathtaking level of calculated malice, corporate
betrayal, and utter disregard for the law."

Judge Thorne banged her gavel.

"On the count of Bank Fraud: Guilty.
On the count of Aggravated Wire Fraud: Guilty.
On the count of Grand Larceny and Forgery: Guilty."

The judge looked directly at Adrian.

"This court sentences you, Adrian Cole, to a term of sixteen years in federal
custody at FCI Fort Dix, with zero eligibility for parole. Furthermore, you are
ordered to pay mandatory restitution in the amount of $14.2 million to Vance
Global Enterprises, alongside the total forfeiture of all personal assets."

Bang! The sound of the gavel fell like a guillotine.

Adrian’s legs gave out. He collapsed into his defense attorney's arms, weeping
uncontrollably as the marshals unlocked his chair and dragged him toward the
heavy steel holding cells.

As he was pulled through the secure doorway, Adrian turned his head for one
final, desperate look at the gallery.

Vivian did not look at him. She was already standing, buttoning her tailored
coat, and turning her back to the courtroom, walking out into the bright
sunlight of freedom.
