Chapter 9: The New Walls

The house they took me to wasn’t a mansion, but it was warm, safe, and mine.

It sat on a quiet street with a fenced backyard and a security system that Colonel Hayes personally oversaw. The nursery was already set up — soft blue walls, a crib, a rocking chair by the window. Someone had even stocked the kitchen with food and left a note on the counter: Welcome home, Mrs. Carter.

I walked through every room slowly, one hand on my belly, taking it all in.

No one was going to tell me to move to the garage here. No one was going to complain about the sound of a baby crying. No one was going to forget what Daniel had done for them.

This place was mine.

That night, after the soldiers left and Colonel Hayes made sure everything was secure, I sat in the rocking chair in the nursery and cried for the first time in weeks.

Not because I was sad.

Because I was finally allowed to rest.
