Chapter 13: Preparing for Arrival

As my due date approached, the house became even quieter and more peaceful.

I set up the nursery exactly the way I wanted. I bought baby clothes without anyone criticizing the cost. I went to doctor appointments without having to explain where I was going or why I needed the car.

Colonel Hayes checked in once a week. Sometimes he brought food. Sometimes he just sat with me for a few minutes and told stories about Daniel from their time together.

Those stories were the most precious gifts he could have given me.

On Christmas Eve, I sat in the nursery and wrapped a small gift for the baby — a tiny Marine Corps onesie I had ordered online. I placed it in the crib and whispered, “Your daddy would have loved seeing you in this.”

For the first time, thinking about Daniel didn’t only bring pain. It brought gratitude.
