Chapter 10: The First Night of Peace

I slept in a real bed for the first time in months.
The sheets were soft. The room was warm. There was no wind slipping through cracks. No laughter from a family that didn’t want me. Just quiet.
In the middle of the night, I woke up to the baby kicking. I placed my hand on my belly and whispered into the dark.
“Your daddy would be proud of what we did,” I said. “He started something that will save lives. And Mommy finished it. For him. For you.”
The baby settled after a while.
I lay there staring at the ceiling, thinking about the look on my family’s faces when the SUVs pulled up. The shock. The confusion. The fear.
They had spent nine months treating me like I was worthless.
