Chapter 11: The Messages Begin

By the next morning, my phone was full of missed calls and messages.
Rachel had texted seventeen times. My mother had called six times. My father had sent one long email that started with “We need to talk” and ended with “We’re still family.”
I didn’t answer any of them.
Instead, I spent the day resting, eating proper meals, and going through the documents Colonel Hayes had given me. The numbers were still hard to believe. The title still felt strange.
Chief Technology Officer.
