Chapter 12 - The Hospital Confession: "I Never Married You for the Shares"

The waiting room of Northwestern Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and

dread. For six agonizing hours, I sat in blood-stained clothes, refusing to

leave the surgical waiting area.

At 4:00 AM, the surgeon finally emerged. The bullet had passed through Graham’s

shoulder, missing the main artery by less than two inches. He was stable, out of

danger, and resting in the VIP recovery wing.

When I entered his dimly lit room, Graham was awake, propped up against the

pillows with an IV line attached to his arm and heavy bandages across his chest.

When he saw me standing in the doorway, his exhausted face lit up.

“Come here,” he said, his voice rough and raspy.

I walked over to the bed on trembling legs, sat down on the edge of the

mattress, and took his uninjured hand in both of mine, burying my face against

his knuckles as tears finally poured freely down my cheeks.

“Don't ever do that again,” I sobbed. “Do you hear me? Don't you ever take a

bullet for me again.”

Graham used his thumb to wipe the tears from my cheeks. “I’d do it a thousand

times, Avery.”

“Why?” I looked up into his eyes. “The company is safe. Marcus is going to

prison for attempted murder and corporate treason. The trust is fulfilled. You

don't have to keep pretending anymore.”

Graham sighed softly, his gaze holding mine with an honesty that took my breath

away.

“Avery… I didn't marry you in Vegas to save the company.”

I froze. “What?”

“The trust had an alternative clause,” Graham revealed quietly. “I could have

transferred the shares to a charitable foundation and kept total executive

control as chairman without getting married at all. My legal team had that

paperwork ready three months ago.”

My heart stopped. “Then… why did you marry me?”

“Because when I saw your room ransacked in Vegas, and I realized Marcus was

targeting you because of me, I lost my mind with fear,” Graham confessed, his

voice thick with emotion. “I’ve loved you for two years, Avery. Watching you

walk into my office every morning, brilliant, fierce, and beautiful… and I was

too terrified of my own darkness to tell you. In Vegas, I used the trust as an

excuse to put my ring on your finger, because I couldn't bear the thought of

existing in this world without you as mine.”

The room fell completely silent. The words washed over me, healing every doubt

and fear I had carried for weeks.

“You’re the Ice King,” I whispered through my tears, a smile breaking across my

face. “You don't make reckless decisions.”

“I’m not the Ice King with you,” Graham murmured, pulling me gently down until

our lips met in a soft, tender, and deeply passionate kiss. “I’m just a man who

is utterly, hopelessly in love with his wife.”
