Chapter 6 - The Vanishing Inheritance

Two uniformed police officers stood in the doorway of our master bedroom, taking
notes as Mom calmly and methodically presented the evidence.
Officer Martinez, a seasoned veteran with graying temples, looked down at the
shattered door frame, the scattered medical supplies, and the fraudulent
power-of-attorney forms spread across the dresser.
"Mrs. Vance," Officer Martinez said, addressing me with gentle professionalism,
"we have already broadcast a BOLO—be on the lookout—for your husband’s vehicle.
Given the forced entry into this room, the verbal threats, and your current
medical vulnerability, we are issuing an emergency temporary protection order
immediately."
"Thank you, Officer," I whispered, the exhaustion finally pulling my eyelids
down. Every muscle in my back was locked in a tight, burning spasm.
"We also need to file an emergency freeze with the county recorder of deeds and
your financial institutions," Mom told the officers, her voice sharp and
authoritative. "Colin has access to her personal identification numbers and has
already attempted to execute fraudulent asset transfers while she is medically
incapacitated."
While Brian spoke with the second officer in the hallway, providing a full
witness statement regarding Colin’s deception, Ashley sat quietly in the
armchair in the corner of the room, holding the black leather ledger.
She had spent the last twenty minutes sorting through the spilled papers. Her
hands were shaking.
"Mara," Ashley said softly after the police stepped downstairs to process the
paperwork. "You need to see this."
Mom helped me adjust the angle of my pillow so I could look at the document
Ashley was holding.
It was a bank withdrawal receipt dated two days before my surgery—the exact
afternoon Colin had claimed he was at the hospital pharmacy picking up my
postoperative comfort medications.
The receipt showed a cashier's check issued from my private inherited trust
account in the amount of $180,000, payable to an entity called Vance Logistics
Holdings LLC.
"He drained my savings," I said, a cold numbness spreading through my chest.
"That was the money my father left me for medical emergencies and property
taxes. He emptied the entire account while I was fasting for surgery."
"That's not all," Ashley said, her voice breaking with grief and shame for her
brother’s actions. "Look at the business filing attached to the back of the
LLC."
I leaned forward as far as the pain would allow.
The LLC had two registered managing partners.
The first was Colin Vance.
The second was a name I recognized instantly: Valerie Mercer.
Valerie Mercer was Colin’s former college girlfriend and the senior portfolio
manager at the regional investment firm Colin had hired last year to 'manage'
our household financial planning.
For three years, Colin had insisted that Valerie was merely a trusted corporate
consultant who was helping us build our long-term wealth. He had invited her to
our anniversary dinner two years ago, claiming she was a crucial professional
ally.
"He didn't just steal the money to pay off business debt," Ashley said, wiping a
tear from her cheek. "He transferred your money into a joint business entity
with Valerie. And look at the address listed for the LLC headquarters."
It wasn't a commercial office park in downtown Pittsburgh.
It was a luxury townhouse in an upscale waterfront development three miles from
our house—a property purchased under the LLC's name four months ago.
Colin hadn't just been planning to financially ruin me while I was bedridden.
He had built an entire parallel life with another woman, using my inherited
money to fund their luxury home, while keeping me trapped in a house he had
secretly encumbered with secondary mortgages.
Suddenly, a sharp, stabbing spasm seized my lower back, far worse than any pain
I had felt all day.
A warm, wet sensation spread beneath the sterile bandage against my spine.

Mom immediately pulled back my shirt, and her face went completely pale.
"Ashley, call 911 back right now," Mom ordered, her voice laced with sudden,
intense urgency. "The physical stress and the muscle spasms have torn the deep
fascial incision. She’s bleeding through the surgical dressing."
