Chapter 10 - The Forensic Avalanche

By eight o’clock the following morning, the private conference room adjacent to
my hospital wing looked like a high-stakes legal command center.
David Chen, the senior forensic financial attorney Brian had retained, sat
across from Mom and me with three open briefcases full of court filings, digital
subpoenas, and asset-freezing orders.
David was a sharp, razor-focused litigator with a reputation for utterly
dismantling corporate fraud schemes.
"Mara," David said, adjusting his glasses as he laid out a series of brightly
colored charts on the table. "I’ve spent the last four hours reviewing the
Project Phoenix digital files, the Keystone loan documentation, and the footage
from your home security system. What Colin and Valerie Mercer attempted here
isn't just a messy divorce—it’s an organized criminal conspiracy."
"What are our immediate legal moves?" Mom asked, handing David a fresh cup of
coffee.
"At seven-thirty this morning, before the markets opened, I filed an emergency
ex-parte motion with the Court of Common Pleas," David explained with a calm,
predatory smile. "Judge Holloway signed every single order."
He slid three stamped court documents across the table for me to review:
1. A Complete Freeze on All Personal and Corporate Accounts: Every bank
account, investment portfolio, safe deposit box, and digital asset
associated with Colin Vance, Valerie Mercer, and Vance Logistics Holdings
LLC was frozen under court order.
2. Emergency Lis Pendens Filings: Legal notices were placed on the Meadowbrook
house, the luxury waterfront townhouse, and the Oakridge timberland, making
it legally impossible for anyone to sell, transfer, or borrow against the
properties.
3. A Formal Referral to the SEC and the District Attorney's Special
Investigations Unit: Complete forensic copies of the forged signatures, the
fraudulent insurance policy, and Valerie Mercer’s corporate emails were
delivered by private courier to the federal and state prosecutors.
"What about Marion?" Ashley asked from the doorway, having just returned from
checking on her children.
"Colin’s mother was formally arraigned two hours ago," David replied. "She was
charged with felony conspiracy to commit grand larceny, criminal trespass, and
tampering with physical evidence. Her country club friends won't be seeing her
anytime soon—her bail was set at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and
because her personal accounts are frozen pending the fraud audit, she’s
currently sitting in the county holding facility."
A soft knock came at the door, and Dr. Sterling walked in with my morning
discharge evaluation.
"Well, Mara," Dr. Sterling said, looking over my vital signs with a broad,
genuine smile. "Your inflammatory markers are down, the incision has been safely
re-sutured and reinforced, and your neurological exam is completely clear. You
are officially cleared to go home."
"Not to Meadowbrook Lane," Mom stated firmly.
"No," I agreed, looking at Mom and Ashley. "I'm going to Mom’s house in the
countryside. The guest cottage has a ground-floor suite, no stairs, and thirty
acres of peace and quiet."
"I've already arranged for a private medical transport to take you there
comfortably," David Chen said, gathering his files. "And while you spend the
next six weeks healing your spine, my team is going to systematically dismantle
Colin and Valerie’s empire piece by piece."
As the medical transport team arrived with a specialized wheelchair, my personal
cell phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.
I pressed the speaker button.
May you like
"Mara?" a frantic, desperate voice sobbed through the speaker.
It was Valerie Mercer.
