Chapter 4 - The Shattered Ledger

BAM!
The master bedroom door buckled inward against the deadbolt.
"Mara! Give me your phone!" Colin screamed through the wood, his voice raw with
animal desperation. "Give me your thumbprint! Now!"
Mom stood directly in front of the door, her hands clenched into white-knuckled
fists. "Colin, step away from that door! The police are already on their way!"
"I don't care about the police!" Colin roared, throwing his entire body weight
against the wood. The heavy oak frame groaned, the screws holding the strike
plate beginning to splinter the white-painted molding. "They're repossessing the
cars! They're putting a lien freeze on every account tied to this address! If I
don't initiate the digital wire transfer from Mara’s private trust account in
the next ten minutes, everything is gone! I’ll be ruined!"
"You're already ruined, Colin," Ashley yelled from the top of the stairs behind
him. "Brian, grab him! Don't let him break that door!"
I heard the violent scuffle of two grown men wrestling in the narrow hallway.
Brian grunted with exertion, grappling with his brother-in-law.
"Get your hands off me, Brian!" Colin snarled. "You don't understand! I owe
Keystone three hundred and fifty thousand dollars! If the transfer doesn't go
through tonight, they're handing the fraud files to the district attorney!"
The confession hung in the air like poison.
Mom’s phone finally connected to the emergency dispatcher. "Yes, this is Evelyn
Vance. I am at 742 Meadowbrook Lane. We have an active domestic disturbance, an
attempted forced entry into a medical recovery room, and a violent individual
attempting to assault a postoperative patient. We need units dispatched
immediately."
Outside the bedroom door, the violent scuffle ended with a sickening thud as
Colin broke Brian’s grip and hurled himself against the center of the wooden
door.
The deadbolt ripped free from the splintered door jamb.
The door flew open with a deafening crack, slamming against the drywall.
Colin stood in the threshold, disheveled, his dress shirt torn at the collar,
his eyes bloodshot and wild with panic. In his right hand, he held a heavy black
leather ledger—the same ledger he had kept locked in the basement safe for three
years.
He didn't look at Mom. He didn't look at his sister. His bloodshot eyes locked
onto the nightstand beside my bed, where my iPhone was resting beside my pain
medication.
"Mara," he panted, taking a predatory step toward the bed. "Unlock the phone.
Authorize the banking app. If you do this, I can fix it. I can pay Keystone, I
can pay the contractors, and we can pretend this never happened."
"Don't you take another step," Mom warned, stepping directly into his path with
a heavy brass lamp she had grabbed from the dresser.
"Get out of my way, old woman!" Colin lunged forward, swiping his arm out to
push Mom aside.
"Colin, NO!" Ashley screamed.
Brian tackled Colin from behind around the waist, bringing both of them crashing
down onto the hardwood floor right at the foot of my bed.
The impact shook the room. The black leather ledger flew from Colin’s grip,
sliding across the polished floorboards and coming to rest against Mom’s shoes.
The brass lock on the ledger snapped open from the force of the fall.
Loose documents, printed bank statements, and color-coded spreadsheets spilled
across the floor like a toxic fan.
Mom instantly pinned the papers with her foot, scooping up the top three pages
before Colin could scramble out of Brian’s grip.
She glanced at the top document, and her face went completely expressionless—a
terrifying, chilling stillness that I had only ever seen when a patient was
crashing on an operating table.
"Evelyn... give me that," Colin wheezed, struggling against Brian’s hold on the
floor. "That’s private business property!"
Mom looked down at the paper, then slowly looked up at Colin, her voice dropping
into a register of icy, absolute contempt.
"This isn't business property, Colin," Mom said quietly. "This is a forged life
insurance policy."

She turned the document toward me so I could see the bold, red-stamped
underwriting approval dated exactly six weeks before my spinal surgery:
POLICY HOLDER: MARA VANCE.
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: COLIN VANCE.
COVERAGE AMOUNT: $2,000,000.
SPECIAL RIDER: ACCIDENTAL POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATION / WRONGFUL DEATH.
