Chapter 5 - The Mystery in the Vault

Twenty-four hours after the boardroom coup, Zachary Patterson was officially locked out of Patterson Global Tech. The headlines dominated every financial network and tabloid in the country. Paparazzi camped outside his private athletic club, while corporate crisis managers struggled to contain the fallout.

Late that evening, Rachel stood alone in the master study of the penthouse. The vast city skyline glittered outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. She was packing the remainder of Zachary’s personal belongings into leather luggage when Elizabeth walked into the room, holding an unsealed manila envelope.

“The court froze all of his personal accounts,” Elizabeth said, setting the envelope on the desk. “Alice Carter’s lawyers have already reached out offering full cooperation in exchange for immunity regarding the shell company transfers. She sold him out in less than a day.”

Rachel let out a quiet, humorless breath. “Loyalty bought with stolen money never lasts long.”

“There’s something else, Rach,” Elizabeth said, her tone suddenly turning serious. “The private investigators finally gained access to Zachary’s private safe deposit box at Manhattan Private Trust. The one registered under an offshore trust in Zurich.”

Rachel turned around, placing a protective hand on her baby bump. “Did they find the rest of the diverted funds?”

“No,” Elizabeth replied, pulling a pair of latex gloves from her pocket and laying out the contents of the envelope on the mahogany desk. “There was no money in the vault. Just these.”

Rachel stepped forward and looked down.

On the desk lay a single black velvet jewelry box, an encrypted titanium flash drive, and a faded medical dossier dated eight years ago—before she and Zachary were even married.

Rachel opened the medical dossier first. As her eyes scanned the official hospital records, her breath hitched.

The document was an official paternity and blood-match registry from a private clinic in Boston. According to the genetic records, Zachary had undergone a medical procedure that left him clinically sterile over a decade ago.

Rachel’s mind spun into total confusion. She was twenty-three weeks pregnant with a child she knew without a shadow of a doubt was conceived with Zachary through their third in-vitro fertilization cycle at Manhattan’s elite fertility clinic.

“Liz... what is this?” Rachel whispered, her voice trembling. “This says Zack couldn't have children. But our fertility doctor...”

Before Elizabeth could answer, Rachel’s phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown private number.

Rachel hesitated, then hit speakerphone.

“Rachel,” Zachary’s voice came through the line. He sounded completely sober, stripped of all arrogance, his tone low and chillingly calm.

“It’s over, Zachary,” Rachel said coldly. “The board voted. You’re out.”

“I don't care about the company anymore, Rachel,” Zachary said softly, the faint sound of airport announcements echoing in the background of his call. “Keep the money. Keep the patents. Keep the penthouse. But you should look at the flash drive in that vault before you sign the birth certificate.”

Rachel gripped the edge of the desk. “What are you talking about?”

“Did you really think I took Alice to that restaurant by accident?” Zachary whispered, a strange, hollow edge in his voice. “Did you really think you were the one controlling this game? Check the drive, Rachel. Ask yourself who really authorized that IVF procedure... and who the father of that child actually is.”

The line went dead.

Rachel stared at the titanium drive on the desk, her heart pounding with a sudden, suffocating dread far darker than any affair.
