Chapter 2 - The Shattered Facade of a Seven-Year Vow

Rachel stood completely frozen outside the velvet alcove, her fingers digging so deeply into the emerald fabric of her dress that her knuckles turned white. The ambient warmth of the dining room evaporated instantly, replaced by a suffocating, icy silence that wrapped around her chest.
From behind the midnight-blue curtain came Zachary’s deep, dismissive voice—the exact tone he used when brushing aside minor corporate obstacles.
“Rachel is fine, Alice. She’s resting at home. Stop bringing her up every time you want my undivided attention.”
“I bring her up because you act like a caged animal whenever your phone buzzes,” Alice retorted, her voice dripping with calculated honey. “You bought me this five-carat diamond bracelet yesterday, yet you can’t even look me in the eye without checking your watch. Are you afraid she’s going to track your location?”
“She doesn't track me. She trusts me,” Zachary answered calmly, the sound of champagne pouring into crystal glasses punctuating his words. “Now let’s toast to the new acquisition. To us.”
Rachel felt the floor beneath her sway. The hallway seemed to stretch into an endless corridor of mirrors and shadows. The man she had loved since graduate school—the man who held her hand through two devastating miscarriages, who built an empire starting from a cramped two-room apartment—was sitting ten inches away, feeding another woman vintage champagne while calling his pregnant wife an afterthought.
Her first instinct was to tear the curtain down, to scream, to shatter the crystal glasses across the table and watch the smug composure drain from his face. But as she took a half-step forward, her baby kicked gently against her palm.
The sudden flutter anchored her.
Rachel closed her eyes, forcing a slow, shuddering breath into her lungs. A scandalous scene in a crowded five-star restaurant would give the tabloids a field day, but it would solve nothing. Zachary was a master of public relations and corporate spin; he would hire top-tier crisis managers, downplay the affair as a momentary lapse of judgment, and paint her as an emotionally volatile pregnant spouse.
No, she thought, her sorrow crystallizing into absolute, chilling resolve. He does not get an easy way out.
She turned on her heel and walked steadily back toward her table by the bay window. Every step required monumental effort, but she kept her spine straight and her chin lifted.
When she sat down, Elizabeth immediately looked up from her salad, her sharp eyes instantly catching the deathly pallor on Rachel’s face.
“Rachel? What happened? Are you having cramps? Do we need to go to the hospital?” Elizabeth reached across the table, grabbing Rachel’s ice-cold hand.
“Liz,” Rachel said, her voice eerily steady despite the slight tremble in her lower lip. “Look behind you toward the circular alcove with the blue curtain. Don’t make it obvious.”
Elizabeth casually shifted her posture, checking her compact mirror to glance at the alcove. Through the slight gap in the velvet, she caught a clear profile of Zachary lifting his glass to clink it against the red-dressed woman opposite him.
Elizabeth gasped, her eyes blazing with fury. “That lying, narcissistic bastard. I will tear him apart right here in front of everyone. Get up, Rachel, we are ending this right now.”
“No,” Rachel said firmly, tightening her grip on Elizabeth’s fingers. “Sit down. Please.”
“Rachel, he is sitting there with his mistress while you carry his child!”
“I know,” Rachel whispered, her voice hardening with an icy calm she didn’t know she possessed. “And if we cause a scene now, he controls the narrative. His legal team will draft non-disclosure agreements before midnight. I don't just want an apology, Liz. I want everything he ever built off my back.”
Elizabeth stared at her best friend, the fierce corporate attorney inside her quickly overriding her anger. “You want full discovery.”
“I want forensic accounting on every shell company, every trust fund, and every asset transfer over the last two years,” Rachel said, looking directly into Elizabeth’s eyes. “I gave up my engineering patents so Patterson Global Tech could secure its first Series A funding. He owns sixty percent of that company because I transferred my intellectual property to his name on our wedding day.”
Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed with fierce determination. “He signed an infidelity postnuptial clause three years ago when you restructured the family trust. If we prove an intentional breach of fiduciary and marital trust, you are entitled to eighty percent of his voting shares.”
“Then we don't let him know I saw him,” Rachel whispered, glancing back toward the corridor. “Let him think his secret is safe. Let him get comfortable.”
Just as Elizabeth nodded, the velvet curtain across the room parted. Zachary stepped out, adjusting the cuffs of his charcoal suit while Alice stayed inside to powder her nose. He glanced casually around the dining room, his confident gaze sweeping over the tables.
Suddenly, his eyes landed near the bay window.
He saw the emerald green dress.

He saw his wife.
Zachary froze in the center of the dining room floor, all color instantly draining from his face as his gaze locked onto Rachel.
