Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Over the next three weeks, Rachel operated with terrifying precision. While Zachary divided his time between long corporate lunches with Alice and managing the upcoming launch of Patterson Global’s flagship AI software, Rachel and Elizabeth worked behind closed doors.

With Elizabeth’s top forensic investigators, they uncovered a hidden labyrinth of offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, a luxury brownstone purchased under a shell company registered in Alice Carter’s maiden name, and over four million dollars in unauthorized corporate transfers.

Furthermore, Elizabeth retrieved the original partnership agreement from eight years prior. The core architecture of Patterson Global’s billion-dollar technology was built entirely upon Rachel’s proprietary algorithms—patents she had assigned to Zachary under a standard marital trust agreement containing a strict moral breach clause.

On Thursday morning, the Patterson Global Tech headquarters in Midtown was bustling with excitement. The annual shareholder meeting and board executive summit was underway on the fifty-second floor. Zachary stood at the head of the massive mahogany conference table, basking in the applause of board members and institutional investors. Alice Carter sat in the guest gallery near the back, wearing a tailored cream blazer, watching him with possessive pride.

“Our quarterly earnings have exceeded market projections by twenty-two percent,” Zachary announced, clicking to the final slide of his presentation. “And with our new system launch next month, Patterson Global will cement its monopoly across North America.”

Before the board could applaud, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung wide open.

Rachel walked in.

She wore a sharp, tailored navy maternity suit, her hair pulled back into an elegant chignon. Behind her marched Elizabeth Hughes and four senior forensic auditors carrying thick leather binders.

The room fell into stunned silence. Zachary blinked, a nervous smile touching his lips. “Rachel? Sweetheart, what are you doing here? We’re in the middle of the executive board summit.”

“I know exactly what meeting this is, Zachary,” Rachel said, her voice commanding, echoing off the glass walls with absolute authority. “Which is why it’s the perfect time to address a critical matter of corporate fraud and fiduciary breach.”

A ripple of murmurs broke out among the thirty board members.

Zachary’s expression hardened, his eyes darting to the security guard near the door. “Rachel, you’re clearly exhausted. Let’s go home and discuss whatever is bothering you in private.”

“We’re past private discussions,” Rachel replied coolly. She turned to the head of the board, Marcus Vance, an old-money investor who controlled the second-largest share block. “Mr. Vance, I have just submitted a formal emergency filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the New York State Supreme Court.”

Elizabeth Hughes stepped forward, distributing thick dossiers to every board member at the table.

“What is the meaning of this?” Marcus Vance demanded, opening his folder. His eyes widened as he scanned the first page.

“Those documents detail the unauthorized misappropriation of twenty-four million dollars in corporate research funds,” Rachel stated, her gaze turning directly to Alice Carter in the gallery. “Funds that were funneled through three shell corporations to purchase private real estate in Tribeca and luxury assets for Ms. Alice Carter—our former marketing consultant.”

Alice gasped, turning crimson as every executive in the room snapped their heads toward her.

“Rachel, stop this madness!” Zachary shouted, his composure shattering as he slammed his palm onto the mahogany table. “You have no right to barge in here with fabricated nonsense!”

“I have every right,” Rachel said, taking a step closer to the table, her presence completely dominating the room. “Under Section 4 of our Marital Partnership Agreement and the 2023 Postnuptial Covenant, any proven act of moral turpitude or intentional corporate embezzlement immediately triggers the full revocation of your assigned voting rights. Those patents belong to me, Zachary. You merely managed them.”

Elizabeth laid a certified court order directly in front of Zachary. “As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, Mr. Patterson’s executive privileges have been suspended pending a formal criminal inquiry. Mrs. Rachel Patterson now holds sixty-four percent of the majority voting shares.”

Zachary stared at the court injunction, his hands visibly shaking. He looked up at the wife he had thought was a harmless, naive homemaker resting in his penthouse.

“You... you set me up,” he hissed under his breath.

“You set yourself up the moment you hid behind that velvet curtain at Le Charm Eternel,” Rachel whispered coldly, loud enough for the entire front row to hear.

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Board members shouted for emergency votes, journalists outside the glass doors began snapping photos, and Alice Carter hurriedly grabbed her purse, attempting to flee the room.

Zachary collapsed into his executive chair, his billion-dollar empire crumbling to dust in front of his eyes.
