Chapter 5 - The Caregiver’s Interrogation

At 8:00 AM the following morning, Brenda unlocked the front door of Maya’s
apartment using her personal copy of the key.

She was carrying an empty designer tote bag, planning to strip the apartment of
the remaining infant formula, high-end baby clothes, and Maya’s jewelry before
officially abandoning her post.

She stepped inside, humming a tune, and reached for the light switch.

"Leave the lights off, Brenda," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the
shadows of the living room.

Brenda gasped, dropping her purse.

Sitting in the single high-backed armchair by the window was me, dressed in my
tailored dark overcoat, flanked by Detective Captain Ray Hernandez and two
uniformed patrol officers.

"Mrs... Mrs. Vance!" Brenda stammered, her face turning chalk white. Her eyes
darted toward the front door, but a burly officer was already closing and
locking it behind her. "I... I was just coming to check on Maya! She was
sleeping so soundly when I left yesterday..."

"Maya is in the intensive care unit at St. Jude’s," I said, my voice steady,
quiet, and deadly cold. "Her incision was ruptured, infected with Pseudomonas,
and she was sixty percent dehydrated. Liam had early-stage hypothermia."

"I... I didn't know!" Brenda cried, backing up against the wall. "She told me
she wanted to be alone! She refused her medication!"

"Sit down, Brenda," Captain Hernandez commanded, pointing to a wooden dining
chair.

Brenda sank into the chair, her hands shaking violently.

I stood up, walked over to the table, and placed a thick manila folder in front
of her. I opened it slowly, revealing glossy, high-resolution photographs taken
directly from the hidden cameras:

Exhibit 1: Brenda slipping Maya’s prescribed post-op antibiotics into the trash
while handing her over-the-counter sedatives. Exhibit 2: Brenda handing Chloe
cartons of prescription infant formula and Maya’s gold heirloom necklace.
Exhibit 3: Bank receipts showing the $2,500 payoffs from C&M Luxury Holdings
LLC.

"Do you recognize these, Brenda?" I asked quietly.

Brenda stared at the photos, her chest heaving as tears of pure terror welled in
her eyes. "You... you had cameras?"

"I am the former Chief of Police of the Metropolitan District, Brenda. Did you
really think I would leave my only daughter and newborn grandson in the hands of
strangers without verifying their safety?" I leaned down, placing both palms on
the table, looking directly into her trembling eyes. "You are facing thirty
years in state prison for Deprivation of Care to a Vulnerable Adult, Reckless
Child Endangerment, Tampering with Prescription Medication, Grand Larceny, and
Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud."

"Please! Mrs. Vance, please!" Brenda broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. "It was
Mark! Mark and Chloe! Mark told me Maya had postpartum psychosis and that she
was going to be committed anyway! He said the money was his! Chloe promised to
pay off my car loan if I just kept Maya sedated so she wouldn't interfere with
their move to Miami!"

"Are you willing to sign a full, sworn confession detailing every conversation,
every transaction, and every instruction Mark and Chloe gave you?" Ray Hernandez
asked, pulling out a digital recording device.

"Yes! Yes! I'll tell you everything! Just don't let me go to prison! I'll
testify against both of them!"

"Take her downtown," I told the officers. "Book her on all preliminary felony
counts. No bail until the grand jury convenes."

As Brenda was handcuffed and led out in tears, Ray looked at me with a grim
smile. "That’s one down, Evelyn. The masterminds are next."
