Chapter 4 - The Glamour of Miami and the Paper Trail

One thousand miles south, the sun was shining over the turquoise waters of
Biscayne Bay.
Mark sat on the private balcony of a $1,200-a-night penthouse suite at the Faena
Hotel, wearing linen pants, a gold watch purchased with Maya’s recovery money,
and holding a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon. Across the marble table sat Chloe,
adorned in diamonds and designer silk, reviewing real estate brochures for a
multimillion-dollar waterfront villa.
"I can't believe how easy it was," Chloe purred, adjusting her oversized
designer sunglasses. "Your ex-wife is such a pathetic doormat. Five months of
crying in that dreary apartment while we live like royalty."
"She’s not my ex yet," Mark chuckled, taking a slow sip. "She’s my golden goose.
As long as her old mother keeps wiring fourteen grand a month thinking her
precious daughter needs expensive physical therapy, we have a guaranteed monthly
allowance. When the trust money runs out, I’ll file for divorce, claim Maya is
an unfit, mentally unstable mother, and demand full custody and child support."
"You’re brilliant, Mark," Chloe laughed, clinking her glass against his. "And
what about that old woman? Her mother?"
Mark waved his hand dismissively. "Evelyn? She’s an old retired widow living on
a farm. She has no idea how the real world works anymore. She sends checks
because she feels guilty for never being around when Maya was a kid. She
wouldn't dare confront me."
At that exact moment, Mark’s phone buzzed on the glass table.
It was an automated alert from his primary bank: URGENT: Account #4492 (C&M
Luxury Holdings LLC) has been placed under administrative hold pending judicial
review. All debit cards and wire capabilities have been suspended.
Mark frowned, tapping the screen. "That’s strange. The banking app won't open."
"What is it?" Chloe asked, lowering her brochure.
"Probably just a routine fraud flag because of the large transfers," Mark
muttered, brushing it off. "I'll call the branch manager after lunch. Come on,
we have a yacht charter at two."
He stood up, completely oblivious to the fact that two plainclothes federal
agents were already stationed in the hotel lobby downstairs, cataloging every
meal, every bottle of champagne, and every luxury purchase they made on hotel
credit.
Every single receipt was being added to Marcus Kane’s master ledger under
Exhibit A: Evidence of Willful Misappropriation and Grand Larceny.
Back in the hospital room, Maya opened her eyes. The fever had broken. Her color
was returning, and for the first time in months, she looked at me with clear,
lucid recognition.
"Mom..." she whispered, reaching out.
I took her hand, squeezing it gently. "I'm here, baby."
May you like
"I was so weak, Mom. He told me I was crazy... he told me I was hallucinating
the money transfers... he said Liam was sick because I was a bad mother..."
"Listen to me, Maya," I said, leaning close so she could see the unwavering
strength in my eyes. "You are an incredible mother. You kept Liam alive through
unimaginable cruelty. You survived. Now, you rest. Let me handle Mark. When I am
done, he will never be able to hurt another human being for the rest of his
life."
