Chapter 2 - Behind the Silent Lens

Within twenty minutes, I had Maya and Liam admitted to St. Jude’s Memorial
Hospital through the VIP emergency intake, a privilege arranged through my
former precinct connections.

Dr. Angela Miller, the chief of surgery and a trusted personal friend, examined
Maya immediately. The diagnosis made my jaw clench so tightly my teeth ached: an
active abdominal infection caused by improper post-operative wound care, severe
malnutrition, dehydration, and stage-two hypothermia. Liam was severely
underweight and suffering from early bronchial distress due to prolonged
exposure to the cold.

"If you had arrived twelve hours later, Evelyn," Dr. Angela said, looking up
from the medical chart with grave eyes, "Maya would have slipped into septic
shock. Her internal sutures were tearing."

"Will she make a full recovery?" I asked, my voice steady, though my knuckles
were white.

"Yes. We’ve started broad-spectrum IV antibiotics, cleaned and resutured the
incision, and Liam is in an incubator receiving warm fluids and fortified
nutrition. They are safe now."

I stood by Maya’s bedside until she fell into a deep, medicated sleep, her hand
resting peacefully against Liam’s newly warmed bassinet. Only then did I pull
out my encrypted laptop and sit in the corner of the private hospital room.

Mark thought Maya was an isolated orphan of sorts—he knew her father had passed
away years ago, and he foolishly believed that because I had retired from the
force to a quiet rural property, I was just a frail, doting grandmother with a
pension. He had forgotten why the city’s organized crime syndicates used to call
me The Iron Ledger.

Three months before Maya was scheduled to give birth, when I first noticed
Mark’s subtle gaslighting and evasive financial answers, I had hired a licensed
military contractor to install a discreet, hardwired surveillance system inside
the apartment. Hidden behind smoke detectors, electrical outlets, and crown
molding, the high-definition cameras recorded audio and video directly to a
secure, cloud-based server.

I opened the dedicated application and entered my credentials.

I selected the past ninety days of footage and hit play.

What appeared on the screen made the blood in my veins turn to liquid nitrogen.

The footage did not just capture Mark and Chloe packing designer luggage with
clothes bought using my wire transfers. It showed Brenda—the licensed private
caregiver I had hired and paid a separate $6,000 monthly salary to attend to
Maya around the clock—sitting on Maya’s living room sofa with Chloe.

On the recording from four days prior, Chloe was laughing while holding up
expensive designer bags. Brenda was handing Chloe bags of high-end organic
groceries and specialized infant vitamins that had been delivered to the
apartment.

"She’s in the bedroom crying again," Brenda sneered on the audio, filing her
nails. "Says her stomach hurts and she can’t get out of bed to boil water for
the baby."

"Let the little parasite cry," Chloe replied with a smirk, slipping on a pair of
designer sunglasses. "Mark said as long as she stays bedridden, she won't check
the bank statements. Did you give her the low-dose sleep aid instead of her pain
meds?"

"Of course," Brenda giggled. "She thinks she’s just tired from the surgery. Mark
promised me a ten percent cut of the Florida transfer once you two close on the
condo."

I paused the video. My hand was completely steady.

This was no longer just marital infidelity or moral bankruptcy. This was a
premeditated conspiracy involving grand larceny, intentional deprivation of
medical care, child endangerment, and aggravated assault on a vulnerable person.

I closed the laptop, pulled out my phone, and dialed a number I hadn’t called in
three years.

May you like

"Captain Hernandez," the deep voice answered on the second ring.

"Ray," I said calmly. "It’s Evelyn. I need you to open a felony task force file.
And call the District Attorney. We have wolves to skin."
