Chapter 4 - The Blueprint of Deceit

Arthur spun around, his eyes wide with a sudden, panicked rage as the heavy steel bulkhead slammed shut inches from his face, cutting off his escape route into the catacomys. He whirled on Evelyn, who was still tied to the chair, but her terrified expression had completely vanished. She leaned her head back, laughing softly, a sound that sent a chill down the spines of both Arthur and Madeline. With a sharp, practiced twist of her wrists, the heavy ropes holding her fell away to the floor. The knots had been theatrical, tied with a specific tension that allowed for an easy release. Evelyn stood up, stretching her arms, entirely unbothered by the two firearms now trained on her from opposite sides of the room. "You two really are insufferable," Evelyn said, adjusting her collar. "The intelligence matriarch and the prodigal mole. Did you honestly believe a high-end corporate corporate fixer like me would marry into this family without mapping the entire infrastructure first?"
The true hierarchy of the house revealed itself in the dim spotlight. Evelyn wasn't a greedy outsider or an unwitting mule; she was the architect of the entire collapse. She reached behind the chair, pulling a small, thin tablet from a hidden recess in the wooden frame. "Arthur, you thought you were downloading your syndicate's protocol, but you were actually uploading a Trojan horse that gave my clients full administrative control over both of your networks," she explained, tapping the screen. Madeline looked down at her weapon, realizing the electronic firing pin had been remotely bricked by the system override. The security empire Madeline had spent decades building was dismantled in a matter of seconds by the woman she had dismissed as a simple grifter.
Evelyn walked toward the main terminal on the wall, her fingers flying across the holographic interface. "The corporate syndicate I represent doesn't want to destroy you, Madeline. They want to absorb you. And Arthur, your syndicate has already sold you out to cover their own losses." The stakes had expanded from a family home to a global intelligence monopoly, with Evelyn holding the gavel. She initiated the final data transfer, the progress bar ticking toward one hundred percent. But as the terminal beeped to signal the completion of the theft, the main lights in the cellar suddenly flashed a deep, menacing crimson. The temperature in the room began to drop rapidly as the climate control systems inverted. The tablet in Evelyn's hand blanked out, replaced by a single, pulsing graphic of an old, antique grandfather clock. A voice, synthesized and completely unrecognizable, spoke through the terminal speakers: Thank you all for compiling the assets into a single network. The cleanup protocol is now authorized.
