Chapter 1 - The Shadow’s Echo

The oak door splintered with a deafening crack as Arthur’s heavy boot slammed against the frame, violently jolting his mother, Madeline, from her sleep. She sat upright in the pitch-black room, her frail frame trembling under the tangled sheets, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Before she could orient herself, the overhead light flickered on, blinding her. Arthur stood over her bed, his face distorted by a violent, unbridled fury, his breathing ragged. Behind him, hovering in the doorway, was his wife, Evelyn. She was weeping hysterically, her face buried in her hands, though the cold blue glare of the phone she held illuminated a sharp, triumphant gleam in her eyes. "How could you say these things to her?" Arthur roared, thrusting his own phone into Madeline’s face, displaying the barrage of vicious, hateful text messages Evelyn had just forged from the elderly woman's account. Madeline stared at the screen, her eyes wide with uncomprehending horror, her voice caught in her throat. She looked at Evelyn, who offered a microscopic, chilling smirk from the shadows. Madeline realized, with absolute certainty, that her life as she knew it was over.

But the trap Evelyn had so meticulously laid began to bend in an unexpected direction. As Arthur continued his verbal assault, demanding his mother pack her things and leave their home permanently, a low, rhythmic chime echoed from the nightstand. It wasn't the phone Evelyn had stolen; it was an old, analog shortwave radio that Madeline kept beside her bed. The static hissed, and then a voice cut through the white noise—a voice that made Arthur freeze mid-sentence. It was Evelyn’s voice, clear and undistorted, broadcasting a conversation from exactly ten minutes ago. “...just a few more texts and he’ll throw the old hag out myself. He’s so easily blinded by his own anger.” The recording played on a continuous, maddening loop. Arthur turned slowly to face his wife, the rage in his eyes instantly morphing into a profound, chilling confusion. Evelyn’s face drained of color, the manufactured tears instantly drying upon her cheeks. The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. Madeline hadn't been sleeping peacefully at all; she had been running a live, encrypted audio feed from the hallway, anticipating Evelyn’s move.

The silence in the bedroom became suffocating, broken only by the looping audio of Evelyn's confession. Arthur took a step back from his wife, his hands shaking as the realization of her deceit settled over him. Evelyn looked frantically around the room, her mind racing to construct a new lie, to claim the audio was a deepfake, an artificial fabrication meant to frame her. She opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape her lips, the bedroom window behind Madeline shattered inward. A heavy, black canister rolled across the floor, spewing a dense, sweet-smelling gray vapor into the air. Arthur gasped, clutching his throat, while Evelyn stumbled backward into the hallway, coughing violently. Through the billowing smoke, Madeline sat perfectly still, completely unaffected by the gas, staring directly at the doorway with an expression of cold, detached authority that Evelyn had never seen before. As Evelyn’s vision began to blur and her knees buckled, she saw a figure clad in tactical gear step through the broken window, bowing deferentially to the elderly woman.
