Episode 5: Shattered Masks

Epilogue: Out of the Frying Pan

The heavy brass doors of the courthouse pushed open, letting in the golden, late-afternoon sunlight.

Julian walked out, holding tightly onto Leo’s small hand. The little boy looked healthier, the dark circles under his eyes finally beginning to fade. Behind them, Sarah Jenkins stood at the top of the stone steps, giving Julian a proud nod before turning back to face the roaring sea of media cameras. Julian took a deep breath, the taste of freedom sweet on his tongue. They had won.

But the relief lasted for only a heartbeat.

The moment their shoes hit the pavement at the bottom of the steps, Julian's cheap burner phone vibrated violently in his pocket. At the exact same microsecond, a sleek, jet-black SUV with heavily tinted windows drifted out of the chaotic traffic and screeched to a halt right in front of them, blocking their path to the street.

Julian pulled out the phone. The screen didn't show his father's number. It read: Unknown Caller.

He pressed talk, expecting to hear the panicked voice of his biological father or his disgraced mother. Instead, a low, unnervingly calm male voice echoed through the receiver.

"Don't throw the phone in the trash, Julian. And don't make the mistake of running."

Julian froze, the blood turning to ice in his veins. He looked up at the SUV. The rear window rolled down just two inches. Through the narrow gap of dark glass, Julian caught the unmistakable, terrifying glint of a matte-black barrel. A silenced pistol was pointed directly at Leo’s chest.

"You really thought a state judge and a couple of pious fraudsters were the top of the food chain?" The voice on the phone let out a soft, mocking chuckle. "That half-a-million dollars didn't belong to Arthur Vance. He was just the courier. The real owners of Apex Solutions want their investment back. And your little brother... well, he knows things he shouldn't."

Julian felt Leo’s tiny hand tighten around his fingers, squeezing with sudden, trembling terror. The little boy looked up, his large eyes wide with fear. "Juju... what's wrong? Who are they?"

"Be a good big brother, Julian," the voice commanded, the chilling tone devoid of any patience. "Walk forward. Open the door. Get in the car. If you scream, or if your pretty lawyer friend so much as glances this way, I promise you the boy's chest opens up before a single cop can draw a weapon. You have three seconds."

Julian stood paralyzed on the crowded, sunlit plaza. Behind him was the safety of the crowd and the press; in front of him was an invisible executioner. His heart battered against his ribs like a trapped bird. If he complied, they were walking into a living nightmare. If he resisted, Leo would die right here on the concrete.

"One..." the man began the countdown.

Inside the SUV, the faint, sickening click of a safety being switched off echoed through the phone.
