Chapter 7 - The Witness's Betrayal

The video screen flickered and died, plunging the high-rise conference room into a suffocating silence. The playback of the patriarch’s confession had been brutal, his voice raspy with the wheeze of a dying man, detailing the murder of Claire’s father with a chilling, detached precision.

The old man, frail and trembling, didn’t fight the officers who burst through the double doors. He let them cuff his wrists, his eyes fixed on the floor, his dignity completely stripped away. Ryan screamed, a raw, animalistic sound that bounced off the mahogany walls. He lunged forward, but two burly security guards tackled him to the ground, their hands pinning his shoulders against the cold tile.

"You're all going to hell!" Ryan roared, his face contorted in a mask of rage. "She set me up! It’s all a lie!"

Claire stood by the head of the table, the black folder still clutched tightly against her chest. She looked victorious, the adrenaline of the moment washing away her earlier vulnerability. The judge, visible on the video link, nodded grimly, the gavel already raised to seal the arrest warrant. The police officers moved in, securing the scene. It was over. The empire was crumbling, the evidence undeniable. Claire had won.

Then, the air in the room shifted.

Vanessa, who had been standing silently in the corner, suddenly gasped. The sound was sharp, like a needle popping a balloon. Her hand flew to her stomach, her knuckles turning white as she pressed against the fabric of her dress.

"It hurts," she whimpered, her eyes wide with panic. "Ryan, help me."

Ryan, still struggling against the guards, turned his head, his face contorted with a mix of horror and desperation. "Vanessa! Get a medic!"

But the panic in Vanessa's eyes wasn't just fear—it was a sudden, violent intensity. She stumbled forward, her knees buckling, and crashed onto the plush carpet. She didn't scream in pain; she screamed in rage, clutching her belly as if trying to physically stop something from breaking through.

"Get her out of here!" Ryan screamed, thrashing harder against his captors. "Get the doctor!"

The room erupted into chaos. The security team released Ryan momentarily to help the EMTs, creating a gap in the perimeter. In that split second, amidst the shouting and the scramble for medical supplies, a hand darted across the table.

Ryan’s lead counsel, a man named Sterling, didn't hesitate. He saw the black folder on the table, the object that had been the centerpiece of the drama. He saw the opportunity to seize the ultimate leverage—the evidence that would prove the whole thing was a bluff.

With a swift, practiced motion, Sterling snatched the folder. He didn't look at Claire. He didn't look at Ryan. He simply tucked the folder under his arm and turned to leave the room, moving toward the private elevator bank where he had a secure line to the kidnapper.

Claire watched him go, her expression unreadable. She didn't look surprised. She didn't look angry. She simply stood there, the silence of the room settling around her like a heavy shroud.

Sterling reached the elevator and hit the button, his heart hammering against his ribs. He was going to prove the tape was a fake. He was going to expose Claire as a fraud, and he would be the hero who saved the day. He pulled the folder from under his arm and flipped it open.

The room was dark, the only light coming from the emergency exit signs and the flickering light of the hallway.

The folder was empty.

Sterling stared at the blank, white pages. He flipped through them frantically. There was no DNA report. There was no confession. There was no key.

He froze. The realization hit him like a physical blow. The folder was just a shell. A decoy. He looked back toward the conference room, but the doors were already closing, sealing Claire inside with the chaos.

As the elevator descended, Sterling’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his thumb trembling over the screen. It was a text message. He opened it, and his blood ran cold.

*You have the key now. But you’re not the only one.*
