Chapter 5 - The Custody Threat

The air in the high-rise conference room had grown so thin it was difficult to breathe. Outside, the city of Seattle was a grey smear of rain and steel, but inside, the silence was absolute, heavy with the scent of stale coffee and suppressed rage.
Ryan stood up, the leather of his chair screeching against the polished floor. He smoothed the front of his bespoke suit, trying to regain the dominance he had lost when the trust fund documents had been tossed onto the table like a gauntlet. He walked to the head of the table, his eyes never leaving Claire. He looked tired, his face drawn tight, but his voice remained a weapon.
"You are unfit," Ryan stated, the word landing with the finality of a gavel strike. He turned to his lawyer, who was already typing furiously on a tablet. "My client has a pristine record. He is a pillar of the community. Claire, however, is a co-conspirator in a massive financial fraud scheme that destroyed dozens of families. She is unstable, untrustworthy, and financially compromised."
He gestured to the sleeping infant in Claire’s arms. "I want full legal and physical custody of Noah. Immediately. I will file the petition tomorrow. I will make sure the judge sees this woman for who she really is—a criminal hiding behind a baby."
The lawyers nodded in unison, their pens scratching furiously, sealing a fate that would tear a family apart. Ryan sat back down, a smug expression returning to his face. He believed he had won. He believed that the threat of prison time for Claire would make her desperate enough to beg for mercy, and he would take the baby as a trophy.
But Claire did not look panicked. She did not look at the lawyers. She did not look at Ryan.
She simply gazed down at the sleeping child in her arms, her thumb tracing the soft curve of Noah’s cheek. The baby let out a small, mewling sigh, a sound so innocent it seemed to cut through the tension like a knife.
"Look at him, Ryan," Claire said softly. Her voice was calm, almost too calm. "Really look at him."
Ryan scoffed, turning his head away with a look of revulsion. "I don't need to look at him. I know he’s mine. That’s the point. I’m taking him away from a liar."
"I'm not asking you to look at him for yourself," Claire said, her voice rising slightly, an electric thread of tension running through the room. "I'm asking you to look at him objectively. To see the truth."
Ryan stiffened. "There is no truth here, Claire. Just fraud."
"Then why won't you look at him?" Claire challenged, her eyes narrowing. She shifted the baby in her arms, bringing him closer to the table. "He has your eyes, Ryan. But he has her smile."
Vanessa, sitting across from them, shifted in her chair. She was heavily pregnant, her belly a swollen globe that seemed to fill the space around her. She was trembling, her hands white-knuckling the armrests. She was staring at the baby with an intensity that made Ryan uncomfortable.
Ryan stood up abruptly, his chair scraping back again. "Enough. Vanessa, let's go."
"No," Vanessa whispered. Her voice was hoarse, thick with an emotion Ryan couldn't place—fear, or maybe something else. She leaned forward, her eyes locked on the sleeping face of the child in Claire’s arms. "He looks like..."
"Vanessa!" Ryan snapped, reaching for her arm.
Vanessa pulled away, her gaze still fixed on the baby. "He looks like the old man."
The room seemed to freeze. The lawyer typing stopped. The hum of the air conditioning seemed to die down. Ryan froze, his hand still extended in mid-air.
"The old man?" Ryan repeated, his voice cracking. "What are you talking about?"
"He looks like the patriarch," Vanessa said, her voice trembling but clear. "He looks exactly like..."
Ryan lunged across the table, slamming his hand down on Claire's papers to silence her. "Shut up! Vanessa, stop!"
But Claire didn't flinch. Instead, she slowly reached into the black folder she had been clutching beneath her arm since the very beginning of the hearing. She didn't pull out legal documents. She pulled out a second, sealed envelope. It was identical to the one she had shown in Chapter 1, but the seal was different.
Ryan’s eyes widened. He recognized the handwriting. He recognized the lab.
"You think you can bluff me?" Ryan sneered, though his bravado was crumbling. "Another fake?"
Claire opened the envelope and slid the paper across the table. It slid right up to Ryan’s hand, stopping just inches from his fingertips.
Ryan stared at the paper. The room held its breath. His lawyer leaned in to read it, his eyes widening as well.
The report read: Paternity Result: Father Identified.

Ryan stared at the name printed at the bottom of the page. The name that belonged to the man sitting in the wheelchair in the hallway. The name of the family patriarch who was supposed to be frail and dying.
It wasn't Ryan's name.
