Chapter 9 - The Clean Room Standoff and the Extraction Protocol

My heart slammed against my ribs like a caged beast.

Through the narrow metal slats of the exhaust grate, I watched the technician’s
fingers fly across the master console. On the massive digital display screen
suspended above the clean room, a bright red countdown timer flared to life:

CRITICAL PURGE PROTOCOL ARMED — 09:59... 09:58...

"Sarah," I whispered, leaning my head close to hers in the cramped, cold
ventilation shaft. "The moment that purge hits zero, the ventilation dampers
will seal shut and pump chlorine trifluoride through these exact ducts. We have
less than ten minutes."

Sarah was peering through the grate, her jaw clenched, her breath coming in
shallow, ragged bursts. The physical toll of the climb had accelerated the
cellular necrosis in her chest; she was holding her ribs, fighting through
intense pain.

"The synthesis incubator is on the far north bench," Sarah whispered, pointing
to a pressurized glass chamber surrounded by automated robotic pipettes. "If we
can access the master console, it only takes ninety seconds for the machine to
clone Maya’s genetic sequence and combine it with the raw enzyme base to produce
the permanent cure."

"And what about Sterling's retinal scan?" I asked.

"The console won't initiate the synthesis without it," Sarah replied. "We have
to force him to the scanner."

I unclipped the two smoke grenades from my tactical utility belt and pulled the
suppressed Glock from my holster.

"Maya," I whispered, turning to our daughter, who was tucked safely behind us in
the junction of the duct. "Stay right here. Cover your ears and close your eyes
until Daddy calls you down. Do not move from this spot, okay?"

Maya nodded, her small face pale but determined. "I love you, Daddy."

"I love you more than life, baby."

I turned back to Sarah. "When the smoke pops, we drop through the grate. You
head straight for the incubator to prep the raw enzyme. I’ll take down the
security detail and bring Sterling to the terminal."

"David... be careful," Sarah whispered, her hand gripping my wrist with fierce
intensity.

I pulled the pins on both smoke grenades, waited two seconds, and kicked the
heavy exhaust grate with both boots.

CRASH!

The heavy steel grate sheared away from its mounting screws and plummeted twenty
feet to the polished epoxy floor of the clean room, shattering a glass workbench
below.

Before the guards could react, I hurled both smoke grenades directly into the
center of the room.

PFFFSSSSHHHH!

Dense, blinding white tactical smoke erupted instantaneously, billowing across
the ten-thousand-square-foot laboratory like an impenetrable fog bank, blinding
the overhead security cameras and triggering the room’s emergency strobe lights.

"Intruders! Open fire!" Sterling’s voice shrieked through the smoke.

Automatic gunfire instantly ripped through the room. High-velocity rounds
ricocheted wildly off stainless steel countertops, shattering computer monitors
and rupturing pressurized nitrogen lines that hissed deafeningly in the chaos.

I dropped down through the opening, landing in a tight combat roll behind a
heavy centrifuge unit. Sarah dropped down right beside me, darting low through
the smoke toward the synthesis incubator on the north wall.

Using the sound of gunfire to mask my movement, I flanked the two mercenaries on
the right perimeter.

Through the swirling white smoke, the green laser sights of their assault rifles
cut frantic arcs. I lunged forward, sweeping the legs out from under the first
guard, driving my elbow down onto the base of his skull to knock him
unconscious, and spun his dropped rifle around to parry the second guard’s
weapon.

I drove the heavy steel stock into the second mercenary’s chest, sending him
crashing through an acrylic reagent cabinet.

"Cease fire! Cease fire, you idiots!" Sterling roared through the fog. "You'll
breach the containment canisters!"

The smoke began to clear near the center console as the room’s high-powered
industrial scrubbers kicked in.

Standing by the master terminal, Arthur Sterling was furiously trying to punch
an emergency abort code into the digital keypad. The remaining two Ironclad
mercenaries had formed a defensive wall around him, their submachine guns aimed
directly at the smoke-filled corridor.

"Looking for me, Sterling?" my voice echoed from the shadow of the central
pillar.

Sterling spun around, his face pale with sudden, unadulterated terror.

Before his guards could acquire my target signature, Sarah fired two precision
shots from her sub-compact pistol from the north bench. The rounds struck the
metal floorboards right at the guards' feet, sparking violently and forcing them
to dive for cover.

I closed the distance in a heartbeat. I grabbed the nearest mercenary by his
tactical vest, slamming him headfirst into the heavy steel console, disarming
him in a fluid motion, and grabbed Arthur Sterling by his silk necktie, slamming
his back against the glass cylinder of the master terminal.

I jammed the muzzle of my suppressed Glock directly under Sterling's chin.

"Tell your last guard to drop his weapon," I snarled, my eyes burning with
lethal fury. "Or your brains will be the first thing the biohazard scrubbers
clean up."

Sterling raised his trembling, manicured hands, his arrogant composure
completely shattered.

"Drop it! Drop your weapon, Marcus!" Sterling yelled at the remaining mercenary.

The guard hesitated, then tossed his submachine gun onto the floor and kicked it
away.

"David... listen to me," Sterling stammered, sweat pouring down his temple, his
breath smelling of stale coffee and panic. "We can negotiate. Whatever Sarah
told you, I will double it. Ten million... twenty million dollars!"

"I don't want your blood money, Sterling," I hissed, shoving his face down
toward the illuminated retinal scanner on the console desk. "Scan your eye.
Override the purge sequence, and unlock the synthesis protocol!"

The red countdown timer on the wall was at 03:14... 03:13...

Sterling whimpered as the scanner's green laser swept across his right retina.

BEEP-BEEP. BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE CONFIRMED: EXECUTIVE CLEARANCE GRANTED.

PURGE SEQUENCE ABORTED.

The massive digital display flashed to life with a new prompt:

PROJECT AETHER — PERMANENT SYNTHESIS INCUBATOR READY. INSERT BIOMETRIC GENETIC
SOURCE.

"Maya!" I shouted toward the open ceiling duct. "Come down, sweetheart!"

Maya climbed down the maintenance ladder at the edge of the clean room,
sprinting across the floor directly into Sarah’s open arms.

Sarah placed Maya’s small thumb against the biological optical reader on the
incubator console.

The terminal chimed softly: GENETIC SEQUENCE IDENTIFIED. MASTER DECRYPTION
DEPLOYED. SYNTHESIS INITIATED — 90 SECONDS TO COMPLETION.

Across the room, the automated robotic pipettes began rapidly combining the pale
amber enzyme with a luminous violet base inside a sterile glass vial.

"It's working, David!" Sarah cried, tears streaming down her face as she watched
the counter tick down: 60 SECONDS... 45 SECONDS...

Suddenly, the heavy reinforced blast doors of the clean room buckled with a
deafening boom.

The display screens on the wall flickered violently as a massive red alert
banner flashed across every terminal in the room:

SECURITY BREACH: IRONCLAD HEAVY STRIKE TEAM AT SUB-LEVEL 4 PERIMETER. AUTOMATED
DEFENSE TURRETS DEPLOYED.

Sterling’s terrified expression instantly morphed back into a sick, triumphant
sneer.

"You're too late, Miller," Sterling spat, blood trickling from his split lip.
"My extraction team just breached the blast doors with C4. You might get your
cure... but not one of you is walking out of this tower alive."
