Chapter 15 - The Moonlit Ocean and the Promise of Tomorrow

I walked down the hallway into the master bedroom.

The room was bathed in the soft, silver glow of the Pacific moonlight streaming
through the open French doors that led out onto the private balcony.

Sarah was standing by the railing, wearing a soft white sweater, holding two
warm mugs of chamomile tea, her eyes gazing peacefully out across the vast,
tranquil ocean.

I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on
her shoulder. She leaned back against my chest, letting out a long, contented
sigh that seemed to release the last lingering remnants of ten years of hidden
sorrow.

"She’s asleep," I whispered into her hair.

"She didn't check the hallway tonight, David," Sarah said softly, turning in my
arms to look up at me. "For the first time in eight months... she didn't look
down the hall to see if someone was coming."

"Because nobody is coming, Sarah," I said, taking the mugs from her hands and
setting them on the balcony table, then taking both of her warm hands in mine.
"The only man who will ever walk into this room is me."

Sarah smiled, a single tear of profound, unburdened joy tracing down her cheek.
She reached up and cupped my face, her thumbs gently tracing the line of my jaw.

"You gave us our lives back, David," she whispered, her voice filled with deep,
everlasting devotion. "You gave Maya a childhood... and you gave me a future."

"We gave each other a future, Sarah," I said, pulling her close into the cool,
ocean-scented night air. "And nothing in this world is ever going to tear us
apart again."

I leaned down and kissed her under the silver canopy of the California stars,
with the endless ocean singing its timeless song against the shore below.

We walked back into our bedroom, closing the French doors, leaving the moonlight
behind us, and for the first time in our lives, we both closed our eyes and fell
into a deep, peaceful, unbroken sleep.
