Chapter 9 - The Siege of Lake Forest and the Safe Room Standoff

The night exploded into absolute violence.
Before the echo of the fireball at the security gate had even faded, automatic
gunfire ripped through the lower windows of the chateau, shattering
centuries-old stained glass into glittering rain across the stone terrace.
Enzo reacted with terrifying speed.
Without a word, he grabbed me around the waist and hauled me down against the
stone floor of the balcony, shielding my entire body beneath his heavy frame as
high-caliber rounds chipped chunks of limestone from the balustrade inches above
our heads.
"Marco!" Enzo barked into his tactical radio, his voice cold, steady, and
utterly lethal. "Report!"
"Six hostiles advancing from the north courtyard, armed with suppressed
carbines!" Marco yelled over the sound of gunfire. "They disabled the estate’s
main power grid! Backup generators are offline! They know the layout,
Boss—they’re moving straight for the master wing!"
"Lock down the safe room beneath the wine cellar," Enzo commanded. "Deploy
lethal countermeasures. I’m moving Natalie now."
Enzo hoisted me to my feet, keeping his body between me and the open terrace
doors.
We sprinted through the dark second-floor corridor, guided only by the emergency
red floor-track lighting. The heavy sound of combat boots echoed from the grand
staircase below.
"Enzo... who are they?" I gasped, my heart hammering in my ears. "Julian?"
"Julian doesn't have the stomach or the money for an assault team," Enzo
muttered, pulling a concealed Glock 17 from a hidden panel in the corridor
wainscoting and racking the slide with a clean, lethal click. "This is Lorenzo’s
offshore syndicate. If Lorenzo goes to federal prison, his Russian creditors
lose seventy million dollars in laundered assets. They want you as leverage to
force me to surrender the biometric decryption keys."
We reached the service elevator at the end of the east wing. Enzo punched a
hidden sequence into the call panel: 8 - 1 - 9 - 4.
The heavy steel elevator descended rapidly into the subterranean foundations of
the chateau, opening directly into a massive, climate-controlled wine cellar
lined with thousands of vintage bottles.
At the far end of the cellar stood a reinforced bank-vault door made of six-inch
solid titanium.
Enzo grabbed my hands, his amber eyes burning into mine under the dim emergency
lights.
"Step inside the safe room, Natalie. The vault is airtight, independent of the
house ventilation, and reinforced against anti-tank ordnance. You will be
completely safe."
"What about you?" I asked, gripping his forearms tightly, refusing to step
through the threshold. "You aren't staying in here with me?"
"I have six private security guards upstairs fighting for their lives," Enzo
said, his voice dropping into a fierce, protective growl. "I don't hide in
vaults while my men bleed for my family."
"Enzo, don't leave me!" The words ripped out of my throat, raw and uncalculated.
In that split second, I didn't care about the fake engagement, the Saint-Claire
contract, or the multi-million-dollar business grants. All I cared about was the
man standing in front of me—the man who had become my entire world in
forty-eight hours.
Enzo’s eyes softened, a profound, breathtaking warmth washing over his sharp
features.
He leaned down, cupped the back of my head with his large hand, and kissed me
deeply, fiercely, with everything he had.
"I will come back for you, Natalie," he whispered against my lips. "I swear on
my life."
He shoved me gently into the vault, hit the emergency seal button on the
exterior wall, and the massive titanium door swung shut with a heavy, pneumatic
hiss.
CLANK. CLANK. CLANK.
The triple deadbolts locked into place.
I stood alone in the silence of the steel room. On the wall-mounted surveillance
monitors, I watched the horror unfold on the floor above.
Through the night-vision cameras of the grand drawing room, three heavily armed
mercenaries in gray tactical gear breached the library doors.
Enzo stepped out from behind a stone pillar, his weapon firing with surgical
precision. Two mercenaries dropped instantly. The third lunged forward, tackling
Enzo through a glass display case as a fourth operative rounded the corner with
a submachine gun raised.
My breath choked in my throat as I watched Enzo fighting for his life on the
screen.
"No... Enzo, no!" I screamed at the silent monitor.
Suddenly, on the security camera mounted right outside the wine cellar vault
door, a figure stepped into view.
It wasn't a Russian mercenary.
It was Julian Cross.
May you like
He was holding a commercial thermal-lance torch and an electronic bypass
decoder, looking directly into the camera lens with a manic, deranged smile.
"I know you're in there, Natalie!" Julian’s distorted voice echoed through the
vault intercom. "If I can't have my company back... Enzo Romano is going to
watch you burn!"
