Chapter 5 - The Port Ambush and the Brother’s Betrayal

Enzo’s entire posture transformed in a single microsecond.

The seductive, playful warmth in his amber eyes vanished, replaced by the
freezing, lethal stillness of an apex predator. His hands dropped from my
shoulders as he took two steps toward Marco in the shadowy corridor of the opera
box.

"Which manifest?" Enzo asked, his voice dead and dangerous.

"The secondary container ship, The Leviathan," Marco replied in a hushed, urgent
whisper. "Federal customs inspectors found three unmanifested industrial
shipping crates filled with illicit micro-circuitry in the sub-hull. Lorenzo
signed off on the security clearance using your corporate executive bypass code
three hours ago."

Lorenzo Romano.

Enzo’s estranged half-brother and the vice-chairman of the Romano Enterprises
board. The man who had spent the last five years attempting to stage a hostile
boardroom coup to take control of the family shipping dynasty.

"Where is Lorenzo now?" Enzo demanded, buttoning his tuxedo jacket.

"He just checked into the VIP lounge at the terminal," Marco said. "He’s calling
an emergency press conference for 7:00 AM tomorrow to publicly distance the
board from 'Enzo Romano’s unauthorized contraband operations.'"

"He's trying to force my removal before the Saint-Claire board meets on Friday,"
Enzo said, his jaw clenching hard.

He turned back toward me.

"Natalie, Marco will escort you back to the penthouse in the armored sedan,"
Enzo said, reaching for his overcoat. "You will stay inside the residence until
I resolve this."

"No," I said, stepping away from the velvet railing.

Enzo stopped, his eyebrows drawing together in cold disbelief. "Excuse me?"

"If your brother is staging a corporate execution at Terminal 9, he expects you
to show up alone, angry, and aggressive," I said, my event-coordination
instincts kicking into high gear. "He wants you to look like a dangerous,
unhinged mob boss in front of the port authority inspectors."

"This isn't an event, Natalie," Enzo warned, his voice low and sharp. "This is a
corporate war."

"And wars are won with optics, Enzo!" I stepped closer, looking directly into
his cold eyes without flinching. "I know the port authority commissioner—Arthur
Davies. I planned his daughter's wedding three months ago. Davies trusts me. If
you show up with your armed security team, it looks like an intimidation raid.
If you show up with your fiancée on your arm, acting like you came to inspect
the new automated loading systems you personally funded, Lorenzo’s narrative
collapses before the press arrives."

Enzo stared at me for three long, silent seconds.

Behind him, Marco let out a low whistle. "She’s right, Boss. Davies is currently
on-site at the terminal with the federal agents."

Enzo’s gaze softened by a fraction of an inch, a dangerous smirk playing at the
edge of his lips.

"You're far more dangerous than you look, little bird," Enzo murmured.

"I coordinate three-hundred-person charity events for unstable billionaires," I
replied, smoothing down my emerald gown. "Your brother doesn't scare me."

Twenty minutes later, Enzo’s armored convoy tore through the rain-slicked
industrial access roads of Port Terminal 9 on the south shore of Lake Michigan.

The terminal was flooded with high-intensity halogen floodlights. Two dozen
federal customs vehicles, marked port authority cruisers, and news broadcast
vans had blockaded the entrance to the main dry dock.

Standing beneath the steel canopy of the primary administrative building was
Lorenzo Romano—tall, slick, dressed in a sharp gray trench coat, flanked by four
private lawyers and a dozen television cameras.

The armored Maybach screeched to a halt right in front of the media line.

Marco opened the door, and Enzo stepped out into the rain, holding a massive
black umbrella. He turned and extended his hand to me, pulling me out into the
blinding glare of the television lights.

"Mr. Romano! Mr. Romano!" the reporters shouted, microphones thrusting forward.
"Is it true that your vessel was caught transporting illegal contraband?"

Lorenzo stepped forward with a smug, victorious grin.

"Save your breath, Enzo," Lorenzo announced loudly for the cameras. "The board
has already been notified. Your executive privileges are suspended pending a
federal investigation into—"

"Commissioner Davies," I interrupted, stepping smoothly past Lorenzo’s lawyers,
offering my hand to the port authority commissioner standing beside the federal
lead inspector.

Arthur Davies blinked in shock. "Natalie? What on earth are you doing here?"

"Enzo and I were on our way back from the Symphony Gala when he received the
automated system alert about the tampered container locks," I said, my voice
smooth, confident, and perfectly audible to the live microphones. "Enzo
personally authorized the deployment of the port’s new AI-tracking software last
week to catch fraudulent manifests. He came to hand over the internal encrypted
server logs that show the illegal override was executed from the secondary
office in Zurich... on an IP address registered to Lorenzo Romano’s private
holding company."

Lorenzo’s face instantly drained of every drop of color.

"What?" Lorenzo stammered, backing up a step. "That's—that's impossible!"

Enzo stepped forward, towering over his half-brother, his amber eyes blazing
with lethal authority. He pulled a titanium flash drive from his pocket and
pressed it into Commissioner Davies’ hand.

"The complete biometric audit trail is on this drive, Arthur," Enzo said coldly.
"Including audio recordings of Lorenzo offering a half-million-dollar bribe to
the second mate in Marseille."

Commissioner Davies turned to the federal agents with a grim nod. "Detain
Lorenzo Romano for immediate questioning."

"Enzo! You set me up!" Lorenzo shrieked as two federal marshals grabbed his arms
and forced him against the hood of a cruiser. "This isn't over! The board will
never let you marry her!"

As the police sirens wailed into the stormy night, Enzo turned to me beneath the
black umbrella. The rain beat heavily against the canvas above our heads,
casting shifting water-reflections across his sharp, handsome features.

"Where did you learn to lie like that, Natalie?" he murmured, his voice thick
with raw admiration.

"I didn't lie," I whispered, looking up at him, my heart pounding in my chest.
"I just told the story that kept you on top."

May you like

Enzo stared down at me, his breath hitching.

Without a word of warning, he dropped the umbrella onto the wet pavement, framed
my face with both of his large hands, and crushed his mouth down against mine in
a fierce, breathless, possessive kiss.
