Chapter 9 - The Wedding Planner’s Secret File — Charlotte’s Past Exposed

While I spent the next two days trying to build a tentative bond with
Leo—sitting on the worn carpet of Camilla's living room, building towering Lego
castles and listening to his endless chatter about airplanes—the storm
surrounding Charlotte Montgomery took an even darker turn.
Mark Harrison, desperate to avoid disbarment, called my cell phone on Thursday
morning.
“Lucas, you need to come to the downtown precinct,” Mark said, his voice
strained and panicked. “The detectives reviewing the forged divorce documents
uncovered a secondary paper trail during their search of Charlotte’s family
trust accounts.”
When I arrived at the police station, Detective Ramirez met me in an
interrogation briefing room. Spread across the steel table were bank transfers,
emails, and medical clearance forms dating back to 2018.
“Mr. Vance, your ex-fiancée wasn't just paying your mother to keep your ex-wife
away,” Detective Ramirez explained, tapping a blue folder. “Charlotte Montgomery
was previously married in Nevada six years ago to a venture capitalist named
Bradley Hayes.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “What are you talking about? Charlotte told me she
had never been married.”
“She married Hayes under a dual legal identity using her mother’s maiden name,”
the detective revealed. “When Hayes’s firm faced a federal embezzlement audit
in 2018, Charlotte drained his offshore trust of 1.4 million dollars and filed
for an expedited annulment without his knowledge. She fled to Florida and
targeted your family’s logistics network to launder the stolen capital into
legitimate commercial real estate.”
The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with sickening clarity. Charlotte
hadn't just wanted a high-society marriage; she needed the Vance family name and
my clean logistics firm in Canada to wash the dirty money she had stolen from
her previous husband. My mother, blinded by the Montgomery family’s supposed
prestige, had willingly walked right into a criminal web, dragging my life and
Camilla’s with her.
“We’ve frozen Charlotte’s accounts and issued a federal hold on her passport,”
Detective Ramirez said. “Her father has publicly disowned her actions, and your
mother is currently being questioned regarding her complicity in the forged
notary documents.”
I walked out of the police station into the bright Miami sunshine, feeling the
last invisible chains of my past snap open. The grand illusions my mother had

worshipped—wealth, status, society weddings—were nothing more than hollow cages
built on deceit.
