Chapter 6 - An Uninvited Visitor at Midnight — Aunt Laura’s Stolen Diary

Night fell over Miami, heavy with the promise of an approaching tropical storm.
I couldn't go back to my mother’s house, and the thought of returning to the
hotel made my skin crawl. I checked into a quiet boutique motel near the marina
and spent hours staring at the sonogram photo I had kept in my breast pocket.
At 11:30 PM, my phone rang from an unknown number.
“Lucas?”
It was Aunt Laura, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Aunt Laura? Where are you?”
“I’m in my car near the marina. I saw your rental car in the parking lot. You
need to let me in, Lucas. I have something you need to see before Evelyn finds
out it’s missing.”
Two minutes later, Laura knocked quietly on my motel room door. She was
clutching a worn, green cloth-bound notebook to her chest, her raincoat dripping
water onto the entryway tile.
“What is that?” I asked, shutting the door behind her.
“This is my personal journal from the summer you left,” Laura said, sitting down
on the edge of the bed with trembling hands. “After your father died, your
mother became obsessed with controlling the family legacy. When you married
Camilla, Evelyn felt like she had lost her grip on you.”
She flipped through the yellowed pages and pointed to an entry dated
July 12, 2019.
“Evelyn met with Richard Montgomery today. They agreed that if Lucas marries
Charlotte, the Montgomery logistics merger will go through, keeping the Vance
estate solvent. But Camilla is in the way. Evelyn said she will make Camilla
look erratic and unfaithful if that’s what it takes.”
I gripped the edge of the table, feeling the world spin beneath my feet.
“Unfaithful? What are you talking about?”
“The fights you two were having,” Laura whispered, looking up at me with eyes
full of sorrow. “Do you remember the anonymous text messages you received
showing Camilla at a restaurant with an unknown man in South Beach?”
The memory hit me like a physical blow. The grainy photos sent from an unlisted
number. The sudden charges on our joint credit card at a luxury hotel bar. The
explosive argument where I accused Camilla of lying, while she cried and swore
she had been at her accounting firm working overtime.
“That man was an actor hired by Evelyn’s investigator,” Laura revealed. “They
staged the entire scene to make you believe she was cheating. They broke your
trust on purpose so you would sign the divorce papers without looking back.”
I buried my face in my hands, a strangled sob escaping my throat. I had believed
the lies. I had looked into the eyes of the woman who loved me, called her a
liar, and walked out the door while she was quietly carrying my child in her
womb.
“Why didn't you tell me this five years ago, Laura?” I asked, my voice breaking.
“Because your mother threatened to cut off my medical trust fund,” Laura wept.
“I was sick, Lucas. I needed the treatments, and she held that money over my
head like a guillotine. But seeing Camilla at that airport... seeing what
Evelyn’s greed did to that poor girl and your son... I couldn’t live with the
silence anymore.”
I reached out and took the green journal, pressing it firmly into my briefcase.

“You did the right thing tonight, Laura,” I said grimly. “Now it’s time for
Evelyn Vance to face the bill for everything she broke.”
