Chapter 5 - Fractured Bonds

The kitchen air in the Cole house was thick, heavy with the smell of stale coffee and unspoken grievances. It was 9:00 PM, a time when the house usually settled into a rhythmic hum of silence, but tonight, the hum had become a static crackle of tension.
Michael stood by the granite island, his knuckles white as he gripped a framed photograph. Ethan stood by the back door, his backpack still slung over one shoulder, looking like a caged animal ready to bolt. Sarah sat at the kitchen table, her head in her hands, staring at a mug of cold tea.
"You're hiding something," Michael said. His voice was low, but the tremor in it betrayed him. "I’ve seen that look on your face before. I saw it when you were twelve, and I saw it just now."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Dad," Ethan snapped, though his eyes darted toward the back hallway where the living room TV was muted.
"The photo," Michael said, slamming the frame onto the counter. It wasn't a picture of Ethan; it was a candid shot of Ethan and a man Ethan had met just three weeks ago—David. They were laughing, a rare, unguarded moment Ethan had managed to capture. "Who is this? And why do you look like you’re in love with him?"
Ethan took a step forward, his voice rising. "That’s David. Liam’s father. I told you about him. I told you I was meeting him."
"David?" Michael’s face flushed a deep, angry red. "You're meeting your brother's father? And you're smiling like that? Ethan, look at this. You’re leaning in. You’re intimate."
"It’s not intimate! We were talking about Liam!" Ethan shouted, throwing his hands up. "I’m trying to help him! I’m trying to do the one thing you couldn't be bothered to do!"
"You're sleeping with him, aren't you?" Michael’s voice pierced the air, sharp and accusatory. "You’re sleeping with the man who took your mother. You’re replacing me."
The accusation hung in the room, a physical weight that made the air thin. Sarah gasped, her head snapping up. Ethan froze, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Dad, that’s not—"
"It is!" Michael roared, stepping into Ethan’s personal space. "You’re a traitor! First you take your mother’s secrets, and now you take her... her lovers! You’re sleeping with him to spite me. To show me that you’re the real man in this house!"
"I am not sleeping with him!" Ethan yelled back, his voice cracking. He took a breath, trying to steady himself, but the panic was rising. "You don't know him! You don't know anything!"
"You’re protecting him!" Michael’s eyes were wild, filled with a jealousy that had nothing to do with a photo and everything to do with the fractured foundation of his marriage. "You’re choosing him over your own blood. Over us."
"I’m choosing Liam!" Ethan screamed, the words tearing out of him. "I’m the only one who’s ever given a damn! You weren't here! You were at work, or you were drinking, or you were just... gone! I’m the one who changes his diapers! I’m the one who tucks him in! You want to talk about betrayal? You want to talk about sleeping with someone? Look in the mirror!"
The kitchen fell into a deafening silence. The refrigerator hummed loudly, the only sound in the room.
From the hallway, the door cracked open just an inch. A small, pale face peeked through. Liam stood there, his eyes wide and wet, his small frame trembling in the doorway.
"Is everything okay?" Liam whispered, his voice barely audible.
The sound of his voice shattered the last thread of control.
Michael turned slowly, his chest heaving. He looked at Liam, then back at Ethan. The rage in his eyes didn't fade; it calcified into something cold and terrifying.
"I'm done," Michael spat, grabbing his car keys from the hook. "I'm done listening to this. I'm done living in a house full of lies."
He shoved past Ethan, the collision of their shoulders sending Ethan stumbling backward. Michael didn't look back. He stormed out the front door, the heavy thud of the front door slamming shut echoing through the house like a gunshot.
The house was suddenly too big. The living room lights flickered as the breaker tripped, plunging them into a sudden, suffocating darkness.
"Liam?" Sarah whispered, standing up too slowly, her legs unsteady.
May you like
Liam didn't answer. He stood in the dark, clutching the doorframe, his face a mask of absolute horror. He looked from his mother to Ethan, and then he let out a sound that wasn't quite a sob, but a guttural, breaking wail.
"I'm leaving," Ethan said, his voice hollow.
