Chapter 3 - Fractures

The kitchen sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting geometric patterns across the mahogany table, but the warmth felt distant, like a memory. Sarah sat with her hands folded in her lap, her knuckles white against the fabric of her maternity dress. Across from her, Andrew hovered, his movements precise and calculated, like a surgeon preparing for a delicate procedure.

"You know I’ve been thinking," Andrew began, his voice smooth, devoid of the jagged edges that Margaret had heard in the recorded footage. "With the baby coming, your stress levels are... volatile. It’s not healthy. You need to be here. In the house. I’ve already spoken to your boss. He’s agreed to let you go."

Sarah’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with a flicker of genuine panic. "He what? Andrew, you can’t just do that. I have a contract."

"It’s for the best," Margaret interjected, her voice trembling slightly as she poured herself a cup of coffee, needing something to hold onto. "Sarah, honey, think about it. Less commuting, more rest. Andrew just wants you safe."

Sarah turned to Margaret, her gaze desperate. "Mom, please. I can't just walk away from three years of work. I'll lose my benefits, my income..."

"It’s temporary," Andrew cut in, placing a hand over hers on the table. The touch was possessive, a velvet glove over iron. "I’m providing for us, Sarah. Just trust me."

Margaret watched the exchange, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. It wasn't the protective husband she had known; it was a puppeteer tightening the strings. But she forced a smile, nodding at Sarah. "It will be okay. We’ll figure it out."

The den was the one room in the house that felt like a fortress. The air conditioner hummed a low, monotonous drone, drowning out the rest of the house. Margaret sat at the computer, the flash drive from the hidden clock blinking at her cursor. She had already transferred the files to a secure folder, but she needed duplicates.

She clicked and dragged, the mechanical sound of the hard drive spinning up echoing in the quiet room. Each file copied felt like a brick being removed from the foundation of her marriage. She watched the progress bar crawl across the screen: Confrontation_001.mp4, Lying_045.mp4, Control_Tape_08.mp4.

The screen flickered, and she was momentarily distracted by a folder labeled Future_Plans. Inside were spreadsheets detailing mortgage payments, college funds, and—most chilling of all—a file titled Sarah_Fleeing_Protocol. It listed exit strategies, fake names, and the license plate numbers of rental cars. He hadn't just been watching her; he had been preparing to hunt her down.

A door creaked behind her.

Margaret spun around, nearly knocking her chair over. Emily stood in the doorway, her arms crossed, her expression a mask of confusion and growing suspicion.

"Mom? What are you doing?" Emily asked, stepping into the room.

"Nothing," Margaret snapped, quickly minimizing the screen and closing the laptop. "Just... administrative work."

Emily didn't buy it. She walked past her, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on the empty spot on the wall where the clock had been. "That clock was gone yesterday. Dad was here, remember? He asked about it."

Margaret’s heart hammered against her ribs. "It was broken, Emily. I threw it out."

Emily turned slowly, fixing her mother with a gaze that was piercingly intelligent. "You’re not just throwing things out, Mom. You’re hiding things. And you’re scared."

Before Margaret could respond, the kitchen door slammed shut, the sound vibrating through the floorboards. Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Andrew appeared in the doorway, his face flushed, his chest heaving. He looked at his sister, then at the laptop in Margaret’s lap.

"Emily, can I talk to you for a second?" he demanded, his voice a low growl.

"Actually, I think I should stay here," Emily said, stepping closer to Margaret. "Sarah is in the kitchen. She looks... she looks like she’s going to cry."

Andrew’s eyes narrowed, his gaze snapping to Sarah, who was standing by the sink, gripping the edge of the counter so hard her knuckles were white. He took a menacing step toward her. "Don't make a scene, Sarah."

"I'm not making a scene!" Sarah cried out, her voice shaking. "I'm just trying to understand why I'm being punished for a baby that isn't even here yet!"

The air in the room shattered. Andrew lunged forward, grabbing Sarah’s shoulders and shaking her slightly. "Don't you dare say that where she can hear you!"

Emily stepped between them, her voice rising above the din. "Stop it! You’re scaring her! You’re scaring Mom!"

Andrew froze, his face contorted in a mask of rage, but he looked at Emily with a cold, terrifying realization. "Get out of my way, Emily. You have no idea what you're dealing with."

The sheer intensity of his hatred for his sister froze the blood in Margaret’s veins. This wasn't a loving brother; this was a predator. And he was just warming up.

Later that night, the house was finally silent. Sarah sat on the edge of Margaret’s bed, wrapped in a blanket, her face streaked with tears. "I can't do it, Mom. I can't stay here. If I quit, I have no leverage. He owns me. He owns everything."

Margaret sat beside her, reaching out to take Sarah’s cold hands. "You don't have to quit yet. Not today."

Sarah shook her head frantically. "He’s going to fire me anyway. He already talked to HR. He’s going to make it impossible for me to get another job. I have to go, Mom. Tonight."

Margaret looked at the clock on her nightstand. It was 2:00 AM. She looked at Sarah, and then she looked at the laptop sitting on the dresser, glowing in the dark like a dormant eye.

For years, she had buried her head in the sand, telling herself that family was everything. But the files on that drive—those recordings of Andrew’s cold manipulation—were proof that he was a monster. And if she didn't stop him now, he would destroy Sarah completely.

Margaret stood up and walked to the dresser. She picked up the laptop, opened it, and pulled the flash drive from the port. She walked back to the bed and placed the drive into Sarah’s trembling hand.

Sarah stared at it, confused. "What is this?"

"It’s everything," Margaret whispered, her voice barely audible. "Every time he humiliated you, every time he controlled you. The clock, the hidden cameras, the files on how to get rid of you..."

Sarah’s eyes went wide, a sob catching in her throat. "Mom... you know."

"I know," Margaret said, her voice hardening with a resolve she hadn't known she possessed. "And I’m not going to let him hurt you or the baby anymore."

She took Sarah’s other hand. "Pack a bag. I have a friend in the city who owns a safe house. We’re going to get you out tonight. But we have to be fast. Because if Andrew realizes you know he’s watching you... he won't just try to control you."

Margaret stood up and walked to the door, pulling it open. "Emily is already packing. We’re doing this together."

As Sarah scrambled to grab the essentials, Margaret looked back at the empty spot on the wall where the clock had hung. She felt a sudden, icy dread. If Andrew found the drive was gone, if he found Sarah was gone... he wouldn't just be angry.

He would burn the house down to find them.
