Chapter 1 - The Recording That Shattered Everything

The rain hammered against the bay window like a frantic fist, blurring the manicured lawn of the suburban enclave into a grey, waterlogged smear. Inside the study, the only light came from the blue glow of the laptop screen, illuminating Linda’s pale, trembling hands as she gripped the small, black USB drive.

The air in the room was stale, thick with the scent of old coffee and the unspoken tension of a secret that had just been unearthed. Sitting across from her were Ethan, her twenty-two-year-old son, and a young woman named Mia, who was rocking a baby in a carrier with a terrifying intensity.

Linda pressed play.

*“...The payout is secure,”* a voice echoed through the silent room. It was Richard’s voice—smooth, deep, and terrifyingly devoid of emotion. “The insurance policy is in her name. The accident is staged. The paramedics will find her with the wine glass in her hand, slurring, distracted. It’s going to look like a simple overdose.”

Linda felt the blood drain from her face. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. He’s going to kill me, the thought screamed through her mind, loud and undeniable. He’s planning a murder.

*“...She’ll never know what hit her,”* Richard continued, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “But I need the cleanup done right. No loose ends. Just like we discussed.”

The recording cut off with a sharp click. Linda stared at the screen, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She looked up at Ethan, her eyes wide with horror. “Tell me this is a joke,” she whispered. “Tell me he’s not serious.”

Ethan shifted in his chair, his knee bouncing nervously. He avoided her gaze, staring instead at the floorboards. “Mom... I don’t know what to say.”

Mia, however, didn’t look at Ethan. She stared at Linda with eyes that were wide and wet, her jaw set in a rigid line. She tightened her grip on the baby’s carrier, as if shielding the child from the accusation in Linda’s stare.

Linda’s panic began to curdle into suspicion. She looked back at the laptop, her fingers flying across the keyboard to check Richard’s call logs. He was supposed to be at work, but his phone had pinged with a notification just ten minutes ago.

*Call Received: 8:42 AM.*

*Number: Unregistered.*

She tapped the number, but it was dead air. She scrolled down. Another call. 8:45 AM. Then another. A rapid-fire string of texts, all sent to the same number. “The package is ready. Proceed with Phase Two.”

A cold knot formed in Linda’s stomach. This wasn't just a threat; it was an operation. Richard was coordinating with a hitman. The baby in the carrier—the baby Richard had ignored for months—was the target.

“Who is he talking to?” Linda demanded, her voice rising. She stood up, knocking her chair back. “Ethan! Answer me! Who is this hitman?”

Ethan finally looked up, his face drained of color. “Mom, please... don’t do this.”

“Don’t do what?” Linda shrieked. “Don’t ask who my husband is paying to murder me?”

Mia suddenly stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the hardwood. She took a step forward, her voice sharp and defensive. “You don’t get to judge him. You don’t know what he’s been through!”

Linda recoiled as if Mia had slapped her. “I’m your mother! And you’re defending him?”

Ethan stood up then, moving between them. He looked exhausted, his shoulders slumped under the weight of a secret he was drowning in. “Mom, please. You have to listen to the rest of the drive. Not just the part you heard.”

“Why? What else is there?”

Ethan hesitated, his eyes darting to Mia, then back to Linda. “Because... that wasn’t Richard.”

Linda froze, the accusation hanging in the humid air. “What are you talking about?”

Mia stepped around Ethan, her expression twisting into a mask of pure anguish. “Because that voice... that voice belonged to Dr. Aris. Richard’s therapist.”

Linda blinked, the reality of the statement failing to land. “The therapist? He’s recording therapy sessions?”

“It was a breakdown,” Ethan said, his voice cracking. “Richard had a complete mental collapse last night. He called Dr. Aris, hysterical, and recorded the whole thing. The police found Dr. Aris’ body this morning.”

Linda felt the floor tilt beneath her. “Dead? The therapist is dead?”

Ethan nodded, his hands wringing together. “Found in his office. Strangled. And the police found this recording in Richard’s phone. They think... they think Richard killed him.”

Linda stared at the USB drive in her hand. The evidence she had clung to—that Richard was a monster planning her death—was suddenly crumbling, replaced by a terrifying new possibility: that her husband was a murderer.

But as she looked at Ethan, and then at Mia clutching the baby, a new, darker suspicion flickered in her mind. The baby in the carrier turned its head, and Linda saw the flash of a birthmark on the infant’s neck—exactly the same birthmark Richard had on his own shoulder.

“Where did you get this recording?” Linda asked, her voice deadly calm.
