Chapter 1 - The Scratching Beneath The Floorboards

The silence of the suburban afternoon was shattered by the violent, rhythmic thwack-thwack-thwack of steel meeting wood. Elena gripped the handle of the crowbar until her knuckles were the color of old bone, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps that smelled of dust and copper.
"Stop it, Elena! Please, stop it!" Mark’s voice cracked, straining with a terror that didn't quite match the panic of a man watching his wife dismantle their home.
Elena didn't look up. Her eyes were locked on the living room carpet, specifically on the spot between the coffee table and the sofa where the floorboards had started to give way under the pressure. "I can hear him, Mark. I can feel him scratching. He’s down there, in the crawlspace. He’s been down there the whole time."
Mark rushed forward, grabbing her shoulders and forcing her to turn around. His face was pale, sweat sheening his forehead in the dim light of the room. "It’s been three weeks. We’ve put up flyers, we’ve checked the hospitals, we’ve called the police a dozen times. Leo isn't down there. You’re having a breakdown. You’re spiraling."
"He’s trapped," Elena hissed, shoving him away with surprising strength. "I saw the trapdoor when I was cleaning the vents. Someone covered it up."
"It’s rot, Elena! It’s just old wood rot." Mark’s voice rose, desperate to ground her in reality. "You’re exhausted. You haven’t slept since the night he left. Look at yourself. You’re a mess."
Elena stumbled back, her grip on the crowbar tightening until her knuckles popped. She looked down at her own reflection in the darkened windowpane—hair wild, eyes bloodshot, clothes disheveled. The image looked like a stranger. But the feeling in her gut was undeniable. A cold, creeping dread that sat in the pit of her stomach. She had to get to him. She had to save her brother.
With a scream of frustration, she raised the crowbar high and drove it down into the splintering wood. The impact sent a shockwave of vibration up her arms. A cloud of gray dust puffed into the air, choking her. The wood gave way with a sickening pop, leaving a jagged hole in the floorboards.
Mark groaned, covering his nose. "Elena, you’re destroying the foundation."
"Shut up!" She shined her heavy-duty flashlight into the darkness beneath the house. The beam cut through the gloom, revealing nothing but a void of blackness.
Elena leaned over, peering into the abyss. "Leo? Leo, can you hear me?"
There was only the smell of damp earth and old insulation. Nothing. Despair threatened to crush her. She raised the crowbar again, preparing to pry the surrounding boards loose when a small voice cut through the tension.
"Mommy..."
Elena froze. She spun around to find Mia standing in the archway of the hallway. Her daughter was usually a quiet, obedient child, sitting quietly with her tablet or reading her books. But tonight, her posture was wrong. She wasn't looking at Elena; she was staring past her, her gaze fixed intently on the hole in the floor.
"Mia, come here," Mark said, stepping between them. "You shouldn't be watching this."
"It’s crying," Mia said, her voice unnaturally flat. "Daddy, he’s crying."
Mark frowned, confused. "What are you talking about, sweetie?"
Mia took a hesitant step forward, pointing a trembling finger into the darkness. "Listen."
Elena leaned back down, pressing her ear against the cool wood of the floor. Thump. Thump. Thump. It was a slow, rhythmic sound. A heartbeat. But it wasn't coming from deep inside the earth; it was vibrating through the floorboards themselves.
"It’s here," Mia whispered.
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She shined the flashlight deeper, angling the beam downward. The beam caught something moving in the dust. It wasn't the empty void she expected. There was a pile of debris at the bottom of the pit—twisted metal, old insulation, and... fresh dirt.
Fresh dirt. That shouldn't be there. The crawlspace hadn't been disturbed in decades.
"Leo?" Elena screamed, tears spilling down her cheeks. She reached a hand into the hole, her fingers brushing against something soft and damp.
Suddenly, the flashlight beam caught movement near the edge of the hole. A hand. A pale, bloodied hand was pushing through the dirt, fingers splayed as if clawing its way upward.
Mark gasped, stepping back. "Elena, get back!"
"Leo!" Elena cried out, ignoring her husband's warning. She leaned in closer, her face inches from the opening, reaching out to grab the hand.
"Don't touch him!" Mia shrieked, rushing forward.
Elena ignored the child, her focus entirely on the hand grasping at the wood. Just as her fingers were about to close around the wrist, a cold, sticky grip suddenly closed around her own.
Mia's wrist.
Elena screamed, recoiling in horror as the hand beneath the floorboard tightened its grip, pulling her forward. The flashlight slipped from her hand, clattering onto the floorboards, plunging them into darkness for a split second before Mia scrambled to catch it.
"Elena!" Mark lunged forward, trying to grab her.
May you like
The flashlight beam finally stabilized, sweeping frantically across the face of the person trapped beneath the floor. The man was battered, bleeding from a gash on his temple, his clothes soaked in grime. But it was the wrist that caught the light—a heavy, distinctive gold watch with the engraving 'M & E Forever' that Elena had given Mark for their anniversary.
Elena stared, her breath hitching in her throat. The man beneath the floorboards looked at her with eyes full of terror, his lips moving silently.
