Episode 2: The Sins of the Son

The opulent ballroom seemed to tilt on its axis as Victor sat paralyzed on the wet marble floor. The murmurs of the elite guests swelled into a deafening wave of gossip, but to Victor, it was white noise. He stared blankly at his son, his mind wrestling with the monstrous truth that Julian had intentionally kept Eleanor captive. Julian, however, didn't lose his composure for a second. He immediately smoothed his tuxedo jacket, stepping into the role of the protective, deeply concerned son with flawless, psychopathic execution.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please, excuse us," Julian announced loudly, his voice rich with practiced, corporate authority as he signaled his personal security detail. "This poor woman is a deeply mentally ill employee who has been suffering from a prolonged psychotic break. She’s obsessed with my late mother's memory. It’s a tragedy, really."

Before Victor could muster the strength to stand or speak, three burly security guards forcefully grabbed Eleanor. She didn't fight back; her spirit had been systematically crushed over a decade of captivity. She merely wept silently, her emerald eyes locked onto Victor in a desperate, silent plea as they dragged her out of the ballroom. Julian directed them to lock her securely within the estate’s heavily guarded private medical wing, ensuring she was completely isolated before Victor could fully process the vertigo of his collapsing reality.

That night, a cold, venomous clarity replaced Victor’s paralysis. He knew he couldn't trust anything that came out of his son's mouth. Waiting until the mansion fell into a hollow silence, Victor sneaked into Julian’s private executive office. He bypassed the digital security and approached a heavy oil painting of the family estate. Swinging it open, he revealed a hidden wall safe, cracking the mechanical tumbler using an old code Julian had never changed. Inside lay a leather-bound set of physical, off-the-books financial ledgers.

Victor’s blood turned to liquid ice as his eyes scanned the columns. The documents provided absolute, undeniable proof: Julian had been using Eleanor’s physical, biometric fingerprint—forced upon the pages month after month—to slowly drain her massive, secret offshore trust fund. It was a multi-billion-dollar fund that legally required her to be alive to disburse money, but one that Victor had assumed was lost forever when she "died." The horrifying truth crystallized in the quiet room: Julian had deliberately set the mansion fire ten years ago to fake her death, keeping her physically alive but enslaved and broken in the shadows to siphon her entire fortune without Victor ever suspecting a thing.

Armed with the damning ledgers, Victor marched straight into Julian’s private quarters, fully prepared to call the FBI and see his own flesh and blood rot in a federal cell. "It’s over, Julian," Victor hissed, slamming the ledgers onto the desk. "You're going to prison for the rest of your miserable life."

Instead of denying the charges, running, or turning violent, Julian did something entirely unexpected. He collapsed into his executive chair, burying his face in his hands, and broke down into genuine, hysterical tears.

"You think I'm a monster, Father?" Julian sobbed, his shoulders shaking as he pulled open his encrypted laptop. "You only know what she wants you to know. Look at this. Look at what your perfect wife actually did."

Julian pressed play on a hidden, grainy surveillance video dated exactly ten years ago, mere hours before the fire. Victor’s breath caught. The footage clearly showed a younger, cold-faced Eleanor standing in an abandoned warehouse. Without a shred of hesitation, she raised a firearm and shot Victor’s former billionaire business partner in cold blood, watching him bleed out on the floor.

"She was a murderer, Dad," Julian confessed, his voice cracking with a terrifyingly convincing grief. "She killed him over a bad land deal. I found the footage right before the fire. I didn't fake her death to steal her money; I did it to protect our family name from absolute ruin, and to keep my mother out of a federal death row. The trust fund money? I haven't been spending it. It's been going to a dangerous circle of blackmailers who found out the truth. I carried this terrible, crushing burden alone for ten years to save her, and to save you."

The narrative flipped entirely on its axis, sending Victor into a spiral of profound confusion. The image of Julian as the ultimate predator shattered, replaced by the tragic silhouette of a protective son who had sacrificed his own morality to shield his mother. Was Eleanor a victim, or was she a cold-blooded killer who deserved her basement cage?

Horrified, confused, and desperate for the absolute truth, Victor rushed down to the locked medical wing to confront his wife. He swiped his master keycard through the reader, and the heavy reinforced door clicked open.

But the room was entirely empty.

The security guards were missing from their posts, and the reinforced glass window overlooking the dark estate grounds was smashed violently open, a cold wind howling through the room. Resting directly in the center of the pristine, unmade white bed was a hastily scribbled note, written in Eleanor's unmistakable, elegant handwriting:

Julian is lying to you. Do not drink the wedding champagne.
