Chapter 4 - The Hidden Camera Footage

The heavy thud of security boots shattered the suffocating silence, echoing against the crystal chandeliers. A tall man in a crisp uniform, badge gleaming under the spotlights, stepped forward. He held a tablet in one hand and a radio in the other. The room leaned in, the collective breath of the elite held tight in their throats. They were waiting for the exoneration, for the concrete proof that would restore the sanctity of their gala and the honor of their social hierarchy.

"Let's take a look at the timeline," the guard announced, his voice a monotone drone that vibrated with the authority of the institution. He tapped the screen. A grainy, pixelated video began to play on the large projection screen behind the stage. The camera angle was wide, capturing the donation table in the center of the room.

The audience held its breath. This was it. The smoking gun. The visual evidence that would send the janitor packing and restore order.

The footage played in real-time, a jerky, flickering loop. It showed the crowd milling about, the waiters weaving through the aisles. Then, the camera panned to the donation table. Victoria stood there, her back to the lens, her hand moving with agonizing slowness toward the velvet tray where the necklace lay. She paused, seemingly checking her reflection in a nearby mirror, her head tilted arrogantly to the side.

The crowd murmured, confused. They watched as Victoria turned and walked away, heading toward the bar. The video ended. There was no Grace. There was no snatch. There was no theft.

The silence that followed was heavier than before, a suffocating blanket of doubt. The projector hummed, a low, electric buzz that seemed to mock the gathered guests. Grace stood frozen, her hands trembling at her sides, her eyes darting from the screen to the faces of the people she had served. She was innocent, and the proof was right there, yet the air in the room felt charged with a terrifying, unspoken realization: the game had already been rigged.

The guard lowered the tablet, his expression unreadable. He turned his gaze toward Victoria, who stood amidst the whispers, her chin held high. The guard leaned in close to her, close enough that the movement might have been mistaken for a conspiratorial whisper, but the acoustics of the ballroom were cruel.

"It’s been tampered with," he said, his voice low but carrying the sharp edge of a knife.
