Chapter 7 - The Husband's Role

The air in the living room had grown so thick it felt like physical weight, pressing down on the shoulders of everyone present. Julian Vance sat in the high-backed leather chair opposite Richard, his posture rigid, his hands clasped loosely in his lap. He looked the part of the successful, unflappable businessman: a bespoke Italian suit, a silver watch that caught the dull light from the chandelier, and a smile that was practiced, polite, and utterly devoid of warmth.

Elena stood near the window, her silhouette framed against the gray afternoon sky. She looked at Julian with a look of adoration and relief, her hand resting on the small of his back. To the audience, Julian appeared to be the shield, the wealthy enforcer protecting Elena from the wreckage of her past. He was the one holding the settlement papers, the one dictating the terms of silence.

"It’s a simple transaction, Richard," Julian said, his voice smooth and velvety, cutting through the silence. "We pay you a significant sum. You sign the non-disclosure agreement. You forget about Mark. You forget about Elena."

Elena nodded vigorously, her eyes wide with gratitude. "He’s right," she said, her voice trembling slightly but with hope. "We just want to move on. Noah needs a normal life."

The audience believed this narrative instantly. Julian was the villain here—the cold, calculating businessman extracting money—but he was doing it for Elena. He was the savior in a pinstripe suit.

But then, the atmosphere shifted. Julian checked his watch, a sharp, metallic click echoing in the room. He stood up, signaling the end of the meeting.

"I think we’re done here," Julian said, extending a hand toward Richard. "The check is being wired as we speak. Elena will be joining you shortly."

Elena started to move toward him, reaching out to take his arm, but Julian stepped back, his expression hardening. "No, Elena. You stay here. I need to handle the logistics."

He turned his back on them and began walking toward the front door, his coat tails swinging. He didn't look at the parents; he didn't look at Elena. He was already mentally checking out of the room, leaving them behind.

Margaret stood up from the sofa, her movements jerky and frantic. She stumbled toward Julian, blocking his path. "You’re lying," she hissed, her face pale and sweating. "You’re the one who called us."

Julian stopped, looking down at her with a condescending smirk. "Excuse me?"

"You called us!" Margaret shouted, her voice cracking. "You called us from a burner phone! You threatened to expose Mark unless we gave you the money! You're the one who wanted the payout, Julian. You're the one who wanted to break us!"

Richard stood frozen, his eyes darting between his wife and the man he had been shaking hands with just moments ago. The belief that Julian was Elena’s ally began to fracture, replaced by a creeping suspicion of a man who would use a woman’s tragedy as leverage.

Elena looked from her husband to her parents, confusion knitting her brow. "Julian? What is she talking about?"

Julian finally turned to face her. The mask of the protector slipped, revealing a man who was cold, calculating, and entirely self-serving. He walked back into the room, closing the distance between them until he was inches from her face.

"I never cared about the brother, Elena," Julian said softly, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that only she could hear. "I didn't call them to protect him. I called them to get to you."

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat, her eyes going wide with horror. "What?"

May you like

Julian’s lips curled into a satisfied, cruel smile. "I threatened to expose their dirty little secret—the brother they tried to hide—unless they agreed to pay me to disappear. But I didn't need the brother. I just needed the leverage to force you into my world."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a single, folded note. He dropped it onto the table in front of Richard. "I didn't want money, Richard. I wanted you to beg for your daughter's safety. And now that I have her, I own you both."
