The One Who Returned / Chapter 4 / 11

Episode 5: Eighty Floors Between Love and Law

The elevator doors slid open with a soft, melodic chime that felt like a mockery of the horror unfolding in Ethan’s life. The bright, mirrored interior of the cabin reflected three faces pale with terror, completely stripped of the wealth and composure they usually wore like armor.

"Ethan," Chloe whimpered, her fingers burying into the fabric of his jacket, her eyes wide and bloodshot. "We can't give her the key. If we give her the decryption drive, she has no reason to keep Maya alive. She’ll eliminate all of us."

"And if we don't go up there, she drops our baby right now," Ethan said, his voice flat, hollowed out by the sheer impossibility of the choice. He looked down at his hand. In his left palm sat the black USB drive—the only weapon capable of destroying the Sterling empire. In his right hand was the jagged half of the skeleton key his mother had given him.

Eleanor stepped into the elevator first. Her posture was no longer bent beneath the weight of firewood; it was straightened by the fierce, protective instinct of a mother who had already sacrificed her entire life for her child.

"We go up together," Eleanor said softly, her dark eyes locking onto Ethan's. "Evelyn thinks she has won because she plays with lives like stock options. But she doesn't understand the length a parent will go to tear down a cage. I hid for twenty years to keep you breathing, Ethan. I will not let her take my granddaughter."

Ethan swallowed the lump of terror in his throat and pressed the button for the penthouse roof. The elevator began its rapid, smooth ascent, the digital floor counter rapidly ticking upward. 10... 25... 40...

With every passing floor, the heavy thumping of the helicopter blades above grew louder, vibrating through the metal walls of the elevator car. Ethan’s mind raced at a thousand miles an hour. He needed a leverage point. He needed something Evelyn didn't expect.

Fifty floors.

Ethan suddenly turned to the elevator's built-in emergency telephone panel. He tore the small plastic door open, ripped the receiver off the hook, and aggressively dialed a private, secured ten-digit number from pure memory. It was the emergency direct line to Marcus Vance, the federal prosecutor who had been trying to dismantle the Sterling group for a decade—and a man Ethan had repeatedly turned away out of loyalty to his father.

The line rang twice before a gruff, exhausted voice answered. "Vance here."

"Marcus, it’s Ethan Sterling," Ethan said rapidly, his voice a fierce whisper. "Listen to me very carefully. You just received an encrypted data packet from my father's estate framing me for fraud and murder. It’s a forged trap sent by Evelyn."

"Sterling? The police are actively tracking your vehicle right now—"

"I have the master decryption drive in my hand," Ethan interrupted, his tone cutting through the prosecutor's words like glass. "It proves Evelyn orchestrated the shell companies, the payouts, and the entire conspiracy. I am broadcasting the unencrypted data stream to your personal secure server right now through this network patch. But you need to patch into the FAA airspace control immediately. Evelyn has a corporate helicopter on the roof of the Sterling Heights tower. She has my daughter."

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "Ethan, if this is a stunt—"

"Look at your monitors, Marcus!" Ethan roared as the elevator chimed, passing the 75th floor. "Look at the data flooding your servers! Save my daughter, and I will hand myself over to you completely. I will confess to whatever you want. Just save my baby."

On the small digital screen of the USB drive, a blue transfer bar flickered to life, rapidly uploading the massive files through the building’s internal high-speed cellular relay. 80%... 90%...

Chime.

The elevator doors opened onto the 80th-floor penthouse suite. The glass walls of the room offered a panoramic view of the glittering city below, but Ethan's eyes were fixed on the heavy glass door leading out to the windy, open-air helipad.

Through the glass, the scene was terrifyingly cinematic. The corporate helicopter's blades were a roaring blur, kicking up a fierce wind that whipped across the roof. Standing near the edge of the helipad, silhouetted against the dark sky, was a man in a dark suit holding a bundle wrapped in a pink blanket. Next to him stood Evelyn, her tailored suit barely moving in the wind, a satellite phone pressed to her ear.

She looked through the glass door, saw Ethan, and gestured for him to come out.

Ethan pocketed his phone, gripped the USB drive, and pushed the heavy door open, stepping out into the freezing, howling wind. Chloe and Eleanor followed closely behind him.

"Ah, the family reunion I never wanted," Evelyn’s voice cut through the roar of the helicopter blades, amplified by a megaphone held by a second guard. She smiled warmly, though her eyes remained as dead as winter ice. "You're late, Ethan. And you brought guests. Eleanor, you really should have stayed in the dirt where you belonged. Look at you... you smell of cheap wood and old regrets."

"I smell of survival, Evelyn," Eleanor shouted back, her voice carrying an incredible strength over the wind. "And I smell the fear on you. You're running because you know the foundation is built on sand."

Evelyn chuckled, turning her gaze to Ethan. "The drive, Ethan. Toss it to me, and sign the digital tablet my associate is holding. Once the transfer is verified, the baby stays on the roof, and I take my flight. If you hesitate for even five seconds, my friend here will see how well a pink blanket can fly."

The guard holding Maya took a deliberate step backward, his heel hovering over the very edge of the concrete roof. Below him was a sheer, terrifying drop of a thousand feet to the hard asphalt below. Chloe let out a strangled, breathless scream, her knees buckling, but Ethan caught her, holding her upright.

Ethan held up the black USB drive. "It’s over, Evelyn. I already initiated the broadcast. Federal Prosecutor Marcus Vance has the unencrypted files. Even if you take this drive, the truth is already in the hands of the Department of Justice."

Evelyn’s smile didn't falter. In fact, she burst into a cruel, triumphant laugh.

"Oh, Ethan. You truly are your father's son—so arrogant, yet so incredibly naive," Evelyn mocked, holding up her satellite phone. "Do you really think Marcus Vance is an honest man? Who do you think approved the funding for his last three judicial campaigns? Who do you think handles the offshore accounts for his family's estate?"

Ethan’s heart stopped. The blood drained completely from his face. "No..."

"Yes, Ethan," Evelyn purred, her voice dripping with venom. "The moment your little broadcast hit his server, Marcus called me directly to confirm the deletion protocol. He isn't coming to save you. He's coming to clean up the mess and ensure you take the fall for everything."

To confirm her words, the massive digital billboard on the skyscraper across the street suddenly flickered, breaking its standard advertisement loop. A breaking news banner flashed across the giant screen in bright red letters:

WANTED: ETHAN STERLING FOR THE MURDER OF UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN AND MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FRAUD. ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

Ethan staggered backward, the betrayal hitting him like a physical blow. The system he had trusted, the safety net he had reached for—it was all a part of the web Evelyn had spun. They were completely alone on the roof, trapped between a corrupt government and a merciless matriarch.

"Now," Evelyn hissed, her tone turning razor-sharp. "The drive. Before I lose my patience."

Ethan looked at the drive, his mind completely blank. He had no cards left to play. He had lost. He looked at his mother, who was staring at him with a look of profound heartbreak, and his wife, who was hyperventilating in his arms.

Slowly, despairingly, Ethan raised his hand to throw the drive to Evelyn.

But before the metal left his fingers, Eleanor did something completely unexpected. With a sudden, explosive burst of speed, the elderly woman lunged forward—not toward Evelyn, and not toward the guard holding the baby.

Instead, Eleanor threw her fragile body directly into the heavy, exposed external power transformer box that fed the electricity to the entire penthouse roof and the helipad’s safety systems. In her hand, she held the jagged, broken half of the rusted skeleton key. With all the strength left in her calloused arms, she jammed the metal key directly into the high-voltage main terminal grid.

"Mom! No!" Ethan screamed.

A massive, blinding flash of blue and white electrical arc erupted from the box with a concussive CRACK that sounded like a lightning strike. The intense surge of energy violently threw Eleanor backward onto the concrete, her clothes smoking, her body instantly going still.

But the electrical short-circuit did exactly what she intended.

The massive surge completely blew out the power grid of the entire high-rise tower. Instantly, the blinding floodlights illuminating the helipad snapped off, plunging the roof into pitch-black darkness. The digital cameras, the automated systems, and the video feeds died.

In the sudden, absolute blindness, chaos erupted.

"Secure the perimeter! Don't let him move!" Evelyn screamed in the dark, her voice losing its calm composure for the first time.

Ethan, guided entirely by primal fatherly instinct, threw himself forward into the dark toward the last known position of the guard holding Maya. He heard a scuffle, the heavy breathing of a man, and the unmistakable, terrified cry of a baby piercing the night air.

"Maya!" Ethan roared, reaching out blindly through the howling wind.

His hands caught the soft fabric of the pink blanket. He pulled with everything he had, but another set of powerful arms was pulling back. They were fighting on the slick, windy edge of an eighty-story drop, completely blind, surrounded by the roaring winds of the helicopter blades.

Suddenly, a bright, sweeping beam of light cut through the darkness from the sky above.

It wasn't the building's lights. A massive tactical searchlight from a large, twin-engine military-grade helicopter slammed down onto the roof, illuminating the chaos in a stark, blinding white glare.

Ethan squinted up through the light. The helicopter hovering above didn't bear the insignia of the local police, nor the logo of the Sterling foundation. Painted in bold, matte-black letters across the side of the military chopper was a crest Ethan had never seen before: THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS DIVISION - GLOBAL OVERSIGHT.

A powerful, amplified voice boomed from the military chopper's megaphone, shaking the very air in Ethan's lungs:

“Evelyn Sterling. Marcus Vance. Your regional jurisdiction has been permanently revoked by executive federal order. Stand down immediately. The tower is completely surrounded by international tactical units.”

The guard fighting Ethan froze in shock, his grip loosening on the blanket for a fraction of a second. Ethan seized the moment, ripping the bundle toward his chest. He collapsed backward onto the concrete, tightly cradling the blanket against his heart, tears of pure relief flooding his eyes. "I got you, baby. I got you," he sobbed.

But as Ethan looked down into his arms to look at his daughter’s face, his heart stopped for a second time that night.

The blanket was empty.

Inside the wrapped folds of the pink fabric lay only a heavy, weighted digital tracking beacon, its red light pulsing mockingly against Ethan's terrified face. Maya wasn't in the blanket. She had never been on the roof.

Ethan snapped his head up in absolute horror. Across the helipad, Evelyn was already scrambling up the steps into the cabin of her own corporate helicopter. As she pulled the door shut, she looked through the glass window at Ethan, holding a small, glowing remote control in her hand.

Through the open doorway of her departing helicopter, Ethan caught a fleeting glimpse of a different figure sitting in the back seat—the nanny, holding the real baby Maya, who was fast asleep.

Evelyn pressed the button on the remote.

A loud, metallic click echoed from the heavy backpack the guard next to Ethan was wearing. It wasn't a standard backpack; it was a pressurized chemical dispersion unit, and a thick, green gas began to hiss violently from the vents, rapidly filling the air around Ethan, Chloe, and the unconscious Eleanor.

“If I can’t have the empire, Ethan, no one will,” Evelyn’s voice echoed through the static of the dead intercom as her helicopter lifted off into the dark sky, abandoning her guards and soaring away into the clouds. “The gas will put your mother out of her misery permanently in sixty seconds. You can either chase me... or try to save her. Choose carefully.”

Ethan stood paralyzed in the middle of the dark, windy roof, surrounded by a cloud of toxic green mist, holding an empty blanket. To his left, his mother lay dying from an electric shock and chemical gas. To his right, his wife was collapsing from the fumes. And disappearing into the vast, dark night sky was the helicopter carrying his only child.
