Chapter 2 - The Saint Claire Name

The antiseptic scent of the hospital corridor seemed to thicken, suffocating the air between them. Preston Whitmore stood with his hands on his hips, his expensive suit wrinkled, his face a mask of confusion. Vanessa, clinging to his arm like a vine, looked between the two women with a mixture of amusement and disdain.
""Saint Claire,"" Preston repeated, testing the name as if it were a foreign tongue. ""You mean... the Saint Claire family? The ones who built this place twenty years ago?""
Emily nodded slowly, her hands resting protectively on her small bump. Her voice was steady, devoid of the hysteria Vanessa had expected. ""My mother was a Saint Claire, Preston. This entire wing, this very hospital, was a gift from her family to the city. I didn't tell you because I didn't want it to matter. I wanted to marry you for you, not your bank account.""
Preston’s jaw worked, his eyes darting from the faded brass plaque on the wall to Emily’s face. The arrogance that had defined him for years was cracking, revealing a terrified man realizing he had stepped on a landmine he thought didn't exist. ""You... you kept that from me? Why?""
""Because I love you,"" she said softly. ""And I never thought you’d be this petty.""
Vanessa snorted, pulling away from Preston. She smoothed her skirt, her confidence returning now that she saw a crack in Emily's composure. ""Well, look at you, Princess. Rich, powerful, and married to a fool. Does Uncle Raymond know you're in the maternity ward? Or are you just squatting here?""
Before Emily could respond, the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway groaned open. The sound echoed like a gunshot in the sudden silence.
A man stepped into the corridor. He was tall, dressed in a severe, charcoal-grey suit that seemed to swallow the harsh hospital lighting. He didn't walk; he glided, his movements precise and predatory. His face was sharp, the kind of visage carved from marble, with eyes that held the cold depth of a glacier.
It was Raymond Saint Claire.
The hallway temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. Nurses pushing carts froze mid-step, their eyes widening in reverence. Even the air conditioning unit seemed to hold its breath.
Raymond didn't look at Preston. He didn't look at Vanessa. His gaze was a laser, locking onto Emily. He moved past Vanessa without acknowledging her presence, stopping only when he stood inches from his niece.
""Raymond,"" Emily whispered.
""Precious,"" he replied. His voice was low, smooth, and terrifyingly calm. He turned his head slightly, looking down at Preston with a look of absolute disgust. ""Preston. I remember your father. He was a decent man. I suppose you are the family failure.""
Preston’s face turned a shade of purple. ""Mr. Saint Claire, I don't know what this is—""
Raymond cut him off with a flick of his wrist. ""You are trespassing on family property. Get out. Before I have you removed.""
Vanessa stepped forward, emboldened by the sheer size of the man, though her grip on Preston’s arm was white-knuckled. She jutted her chin out, trying to project the arrogance she used to manipulate men. ""Oh, please. We're just having a little... disagreement. You don't own the world, Saint Claire. Everyone has to bow down eventually.""
Raymond finally looked at her. His expression didn't change, but a subtle, terrifying coldness washed over him. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.
""I don't bow,"" Raymond said softly. ""I command.""
He turned back to Emily, reaching out to gently touch her forehead. ""You are safe now, little bird. But the nest is infested.""
Emily looked at her uncle, her heart hammering against her ribs. ""Uncle Raymond... what are you going to do?""
Raymond stepped closer, placing a hand on her lower back, shielding her from the hallway. He leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, so that only she could hear him over the hum of the ventilation.
""I have already recalled every nurse, every security officer, and every janitor on this floor,"" Raymond whispered, his tone dropping to a conspiratorial hiss. ""They are all in the breakroom. They are not coming back until I give the word.""

He pulled back, his eyes gleaming with a terrifying, absolute power.
""The maternity wing is empty, Emily. It is just us. And the vermin.""
