Chapter 3 - The Attorney's Office

The office of Margaret Chen sat on the forty-second floor of a limestone tower downtown, a space that smelled of expensive paper, stale coffee, and suppressed aggression. The windows overlooked the Chicago River, the glass reflecting the grey, indifferent sky.

Emily sat in the stiff leather chair across from the woman who was supposed to be her salvation. She placed the manila folder on the desk. It felt light, but it contained the weight of the last six months of terror.

Chen didn't open the folder immediately. She adjusted her tortoiseshell glasses, her eyes scanning Emily’s face with a clinical precision that made Emily feel like a specimen under a microscope.

"The medical report from the pediatrician," Chen said, her voice smooth but devoid of warmth. "It confirms the timeline. The injury occurred at approximately 7:45 PM."

Emily nodded, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. "Yes. And the photos of the vase, and the burns in the kitchen. I have them all."

Chen finally picked up the folder. She flipped through the pages, her expression unreadable. She stopped at the photo of the shattered ceramic vase, then the close-up of the chemical burn on the counter. Emily flinched, remembering the smell of the cleaner and the sting of the slap.

Chen looked up, a faint, professional smile touching her lips. "This is substantial, Emily. The medical report backs up your timeline, and the photos provide a visual record of the domestic environment. The fact that you have a medical professional willing to document the injury strengthens our position significantly."

She slid the folder back across the desk.

"You did the right thing," Chen said, her tone confident. "With this evidence, we can argue for a full custody evaluation. I’m confident the judge will see that Jason is unfit to care for Lily, and Diane’s involvement was purely negligent."

Relief washed over Emily, a hot, rushing tide. She let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. They had a plan. They had a lawyer. It was going to be okay.

But as Chen reached for her phone to make a note on her calendar, the atmosphere in the room shifted. The hum of the cooling vents seemed to grow louder, a low-frequency buzz that vibrated in Emily’s teeth.

Chen paused. She didn't look at Emily; she looked at the file again, her fingers tracing the edge of the paper.

"The problem with high-net-worth families," Chen said quietly, "is that they don't just play by the rules. They rewrite them."

"What do you mean?" Emily asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Chen finally met her gaze. "The Chen family has deep roots in this city. Political connections that span decades. They have resources Emily, and they are not afraid to use them."

Emily swallowed hard. "I just want to protect Lily."

"And you will," Chen said, though her eyes betrayed a flicker of doubt. "But I need to be honest with you. Diane called the police within the hour. She filed a report. She’s painting you as the aggressor, Emily. She claims you are a volatile woman who lashes out at her husband and her mother-in-law."

Emily felt the blood drain from her face. "She’s lying. I was the one who was hit."

"I know," Chen said soothingly. "But the narrative is already out there. The police are involved, and they will be reviewing the livestream footage."

Chen stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the city. "This isn't just a custody battle anymore. It’s a PR war."

Suddenly, the fax machine in the corner of the room roared to life, spitting out a single sheet of paper with a harsh, mechanical screech. Chen walked over and retrieved it.

Emily watched her face. The confidence was gone, replaced by a grim, steely resolve.

Chen turned back around and held the paper out to Emily. "I received this this morning. It’s a petition for emergency custody."

Emily took it. The paper was heavy, coated in a glossy sheen.

"What is it?" Emily whispered.

"Jason has petitioned the court," Chen said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "He claims that due to your recent 'outburst' and your unstable behavior, he is an unfit primary caregiver. He is asking for Lily to be placed in the temporary custody of Diane immediately, effective immediately."

"Effective when?" Emily’s heart hammered against her ribs.

"Tomorrow morning," Chen said. "The hearing is set for 8:00 AM. Before the regular docket."

Emily stared at the paper, her hands shaking so violently the fax fluttered like a dead leaf. "I have no time to prepare. I don't have money for a lawyer for the emergency hearing."

Chen walked back to her desk and picked up her phone, dialing a number without hesitation.

"I’ll be there," Chen said, not looking at Emily. "But we are walking into a lion’s den, Emily. And we have to fight for every inch of ground."
