Chapter 2

PART 2
That very same afternoon, Gretchen sat across the wide desk from Abigail, an experienced family law attorney with a professional office located in the Edina neighborhood. Abigail spent several long minutes carefully reviewing the divorce agreement, bank statements, and tax documents with a serious expression.
“These huge funds do not simply disappear from official records by accident,” Abigail said firmly as she looked up.
Gretchen lowered her eyes to the floor in deep regret.
“I really should have noticed all of this much sooner,” Gretchen whispered softly.
“No, you trusted your husband,” Abigail replied gently. “That is not the same thing as being naive or foolish.”
That comforting phrase almost made Gretchen burst into tears right then and there.
Abigail pointed her pen directly at the long list of financial transfers made to the consulting company.
“Do you personally know this woman named Cheyenne?” Abigail asked carefully.
“I only saw her name once in a quick phone message,” Gretchen answered honestly.
“Your husband has been transferring large sums of money for nearly a year and a half to a company directly linked to her,” the lawyer explained smoothly.
The lawyer then asked her to do something extremely difficult over the coming days. She instructed Gretchen not to confront Joshua under any circumstances, meaning no emotional outbursts, no sudden threats, and no arguments. She had to pretend that she was still deeply sad, confused, and fully willing to sign the divorce papers.
“Men who deliberately hide major marital assets usually bet on their wives reacting purely with emotion rather than with a cold strategy,” Abigail explained clearly. “Let us allow him to keep believing that he has complete control over you.”
For ten exhausting days, Gretchen played the exact passive role that Joshua expected from her.
She listened quietly while he spoke about mutual respect, readily agreed to sell their family house soon, and even attended a formal dinner at a high-end restaurant in Minnetonka where he acted as though they were two rational adults closing a long chapter with dignity.
“I honestly think we have handled this painful process much better than most former couples,” Joshua commented casually over his meal.
“Do you really think you have been completely fair to me throughout this?” Gretchen asked calmly.
Joshua hesitated for just a split second before answering her question.
“We both made our share of mistakes during our time together,” he said smoothly.
Gretchen understood clearly right then that his absolute greatest flaw was never just infidelity or greed. His ultimate flaw was his immense arrogance, as he was entirely convinced that he could easily manipulate and control what everyone around him felt.
Meanwhile, Abigail and a hired forensic financial auditor followed the complex trail of money.
They quickly discovered large corporate bonuses routed through a fake shell company, personal expenditures disguised as business consulting fees, and a secret high-end apartment lease in St. Paul. They also uncovered heavy purchases of expensive jewelry and multiple luxury trips taken to resort destinations.
The final crushing blow arrived late on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Gretchen was parked quietly outside a local supermarket when Abigail called her cell phone.
“I really need you to be sitting down before I tell you this,” Abigail warned her soberly.
“What happened?” Gretchen asked as her heart rate spiked immediately.
“We took a deep look into Maxine’s college educational trust fund,” Abigail explained carefully.
That specific fund had been created the month their daughter was born to guarantee her future college tuition.
“It currently holds far less money than it should,” Abigail continued in a solemn voice. “Nearly three hundred thousand dollars were quietly withdrawn over the last eighteen months.”
“Joshua would never touch our daughter’s personal money,” Gretchen blurted out instantly.
Even as the desperate words left her mouth, Gretchen knew deep inside that she no longer believed them at all.
“Every single dollar ended up in the exact same hidden bank accounts linked directly to Cheyenne,” Abigail stated plainly.
Gretchen covered her mouth with her trembling hand in absolute horror. Having an extramarital affair was terrible selfishness, and hiding marital assets was a severe legal betrayal. However, stealing their young daughter’s future security just to fund a lavish lifestyle was truly monstrous.
That evening, Joshua arrived home holding warm containers of takeout food.
“All of this difficult process will be completely over very soon,” he told her with a comforting smile.
Gretchen watched him unpack the food containers as if he were still a deeply responsible father.
“Yes, it will all be over very soon,” she agreed quietly.
Two days later, they both arrived at the official legal mediation building downtown.
Joshua walked in wearing a tailored gray suit with the full confidence of a wealthy man who expected to sign standard paperwork rather than face severe legal consequences. Standing near the broad elevators down the hall was Cheyenne, looking completely immaculate while pretending to check her phone.
Before walking into the conference room, Joshua gently touched Gretchen’s arm.
“Whatever happens in there today, I really want us to maintain a completely respectful relationship for Maxine’s sake,” he whispered softly.
“Of course,” she replied without showing any emotion.
Then she walked straight through the heavy wooden door carrying a thick folder full of absolute proof.

When Abigail placed the very first fraudulent bank statement directly on the table, Joshua realized far too late that Gretchen had not come to sign the paper.
She had come to completely expose everything he had done.
