Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room

The siren wailed in the distance, a dying echo against the biting wind, but the tension in the Copper Hearth Cafe remained razor-sharp. Two uniformed officers had arrived, their boots crunching on the shattered glass and wet snow that had blown in from the open door.
Daniel stood by the window, his knuckles white as he gripped the sill. Rex pressed against his leg, the dog’s low, rumbling growl vibrating through Daniel’s thigh. Outside, a black SUV idled. Kevin Harper sat in the driver’s seat, the engine running, while Lena sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly at her hands.
Officer Miller approached, his flashlight cutting through the gloom. "Mr. Cole, we need to get statements from everyone. But based on the documents Mr. Harper has provided..."
Daniel turned. Kevin stepped forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture, though his eyes remained cold and calculating. He held up a plastic evidence bag containing a birth certificate and a folded piece of paper. "My sister, Lena’s mother, was admitted this morning. She’s in a coma, and I need to get her last words to her daughter. Officer, I assure you, I am her uncle, and she is my niece. The girl was disoriented; I was just trying to keep her calm until you arrived."
The officers exchanged glances. The paperwork looked legitimate. The hospital admission slip was there, dated that morning. It was a perfect storm of bureaucracy and timing. Officer Miller sighed, checking his watch. "It’s a delicate situation, Mr. Harper. We can’t hold you. But if you leave the city limits before we finish our report, it’s a felony."
"I wouldn't dream of it," Kevin said, his smile tight. "I just want to be with my sister."
He opened the car door. Lena looked up, her eyes locking onto Daniel’s for a fraction of a second. There was a plea in them, a silent scream that Daniel couldn't decipher. Then, the door clicked shut. Kevin started the engine.
"Get in the truck, Rex," Daniel whispered, his voice strained. "We’re going."
He didn't wait for the officers to finish their paperwork. He threw his truck into gear, tires spinning in the slush as he peeled out of the parking lot, screeching down the icy road toward St. Jude’s Medical Center.

The hospital was a labyrinth of white walls and antiseptic smells. Daniel parked in the overflow lot, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He watched as Kevin’s SUV pulled into the "Staff Only" zone, bypassing the main visitor entrance. A security guard waved them through, likely recognizing the vehicle.
Daniel’s gut twisted. He grabbed Rex’s leash and sprinted toward the main entrance. The automatic doors slid open, revealing the bustling lobby, but Kevin was already gone.
He rushed to the reception desk. "I need to know room number for a patient named... Harper. Lena Harper's mother."
The receptionist frowned, typing into her terminal. "Family only, sir. Unless you have a name on the list."
"I'm a witness to a crime," Daniel lied, his voice rough. "Please."
She gave him a room number. 302.
Daniel took the stairs two at a time, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. He found the corridor. Room 302 was at the end, the door ajar. A small "Do Not Disturb" sign hung from the knob.
He slowed down, pressing his back against the wall. He peeked around the corner.
The room was dark, save for the glow of monitors. Kevin was there, standing over the bed. But it wasn't what Daniel expected. Lena’s mother wasn't unconscious. She was awake, staring up at the ceiling, her eyes wide with terror. Her wrists were shackled to the metal bedframe.
"Kevin," the woman whispered, her voice raspy. "Don't."
Kevin turned. He looked at Daniel standing in the doorway, his expression bored. "You're persistent, aren't you, Marine?"
"Lena," Daniel shouted, stepping fully into the room, blocking the exit. "Get behind me."
Lena scrambled from the chair by the window, slipping behind Daniel’s legs. Rex let out a bark, but Daniel shushed him.
"Lena, this is your mom. Talk to her!"
The woman’s eyes darted to Daniel, then to the door. She tried to pull at her handcuffs, the metal biting into her skin. "Daniel... no. Don't let him take her!"
Kevin’s face hardened. He reached into his pocket. "I’m done playing games."
"No!" the woman screamed, her voice rising above the beeping of the heart monitor. "He’s going to kill us both! He poisoned me!"
Daniel froze. The blood drained from his face. "What?"
"He put something in my IV!" She thrashed against the restraints, her eyes pleading. "He wanted the policy! He wanted the payout! Get the police, Daniel! Now!"
Kevin lunged.
He didn't reach for his gun. Instead, he grabbed Lena by the backpack strap and yanked her backward, knocking her into Daniel. Daniel caught her, but Kevin was already at the door, shoving it open and knocking a nurse cart over in the hallway.

"Rex! Stay!" Daniel yelled.
Kevin backed out into the corridor, holding Lena tight against his chest, one hand over her mouth. He looked at Daniel, his eyes dead. "Tell the cops she's my niece. Tell them I'm a grieving uncle."
