Chapter 5 - The Ally

The key felt cold and heavy against her sweating palm, smelling faintly of oil and old secrets. Clara stood in the dim, dusty hallway of the mansion’s lower level, the heavy steel door to the basement workshop behind her, and looked at the man she had once thought of as a grandfather figure. Edward. He was holding a glass of scotch, his eyes scanning the room with a terrifying, calm precision.

"She's in there, Clara," Edward said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in the oppressive silence. "The real Clara. The one they took. I've been waiting for you to be strong enough to save her."

Clara didn't hesitate. She turned back to the door and jammed the key into the lock. With a metallic groan, the deadbolt slid back. She pushed the door open.

The room was stifling, smelling of sawdust, rust, and the metallic tang of old blood. In the center, strapped to a chair, sat a woman. She was pale, her hair matted with grime, wearing the same tattered maternity dress Clara had seen on the surveillance footage. She looked up, and the shock hit Clara like a physical blow. It was a mirror image of herself.

"Clara?" the woman croaked, her voice raw. "Oh god, it’s you. They took me. They put me here."

Clara rushed forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. She fumbled with the zip ties binding the woman's wrists. "I know," Clara whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "I’m going to get you out. Edward... he helped me find this place."

As the ties snapped, the woman slumped forward, sobbing into her hands. "They tried to replace me, Clara. Damian... he’s a monster. He wanted the inheritance. He wanted to get rid of the original."

Edward stood in the doorway, arms crossed, nodding solemnly. "It’s a tragedy," he murmured. "But you are family, Clara. You have to protect her."

Clara helped the woman to her feet. The woman clung to her, shivering violently. "Thank you," she sobbed. "Thank you for saving me."

"It’s okay," Clara soothed, patting her back. "We’ll go to the police. We’ll tell them everything. But first, I need to know... how did you get here? Where were you taken?"

The woman paused, her eyes darting to the floor, avoiding Clara’s gaze. "I... I don't know. Just... a dark room. Then I woke up here."

Clara frowned, confusion clouding her mind. "Do you remember... what was the name of the restaurant we went to for our first anniversary?"

The woman went rigid. Her breathing hitched, a cold sweat breaking out on her forehead. "I... I don't know," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't... I don't remember anything before the kidnapping."

Clara pulled back, confusion turning into suspicion. But then she looked down at her own hands, then at the woman’s hands. They were identical. The realization that her husband had kidnapped a look-alike to fool the world seemed too far-fetched, yet undeniable. "It’s okay," she said again, trying to convince herself. "Maybe the trauma blocked it out."

Suddenly, the woman’s head snapped up. Her eyes, usually filled with terror, were now wide and manic.

"Baby," the woman hissed, stepping back. "You... you don't have a baby."

"Yes, I do," Clara said defensively, instinctively placing a hand on her flat stomach. "Eight months along. Damian tried to hurt it."

The woman screamed—a sound of pure, unadulterated hatred. She lunged forward, her fingers clawing at Clara’s throat. "It's a lie! It's a fake! You're the impostor!"

Clara tried to block the attack, but the woman was stronger than she looked, fueled by a terrifying, desperate energy. Clara was shoved backward, crashing into a stack of wooden crates that tumbled over with a deafening crash.

Before Clara could scramble up, the heavy steel door slammed shut with a thunderous thud. A massive deadbolt slid home with a metallic screech that echoed through the room.

Edward’s voice drifted through the thick steel, cold and devoid of any grandfatherly warmth.

"The game is afoot, ladies. Now that the bait has been taken, the true test begins."
