Episode 3: Ghosts of the Past

Diana stared in utter horror at the crimson stain spreading across the Persian rug. The man who had tormented her for three years lay perfectly still, his eyes staring blankly at the vaulted ceiling. But there was no time to process his death. The metallic click of the suppressed pistol being re-cocked snapped Diana’s attention back to Chloe. Her childhood friend looked entirely detached, her face a mask of cold, psychotic ambition as she advanced, the barrel of the gun pointed straight between Diana's eyes.
"Move," Chloe commanded, her voice dropping to a sharp, clinical register as she forced Diana toward the glass-topped executive desk. On the screen, a digital banking portal flickered, demanding a final biometric voice and facial scan. "Log into the secondary tier of your father's estate, Diana. Release the remaining trust funds to the offshore shell, or I will put a bullet in your head and forge the death certificate anyway. I’ve spent my entire life playing the poor, supportive sidekick while you flaunted your daddy’s wealth. I deserve this life. I am taking your place."
The absolute, terrifying reality crystallized in the quiet room. Chloe was a remorseless, unhinged killer who had spent decades masking a lethal jealousy. Diana looked from the glowing monitor to the cold steel of the gun. Tears welled in her eyes, but she slowly shook her head, her jaw tightening with an unexpected, fierce dignity.
"I won't do it," Diana whispered, her voice steadying. "Kill me. But you will never have my father's legacy."
Chloe’s eyes flashed with an erratic, dangerous fury. Her knuckles turned white as her finger tightened on the trigger, preparing to execute her best friend and claim the multi-billion-dollar prize. The tension in the room was suffocating; the game was entirely in the hands of a monster.
DING.
The sharp, high-pitched chime of the private penthouse elevator cut through the silence. The heavy mirrored doors slid open.
Stepping into the blood-stained living room was a tall, gray-haired man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, flanked by four heavily armed private security guards. Diana gasped, her knees instantly buckling as she collapsed onto the floor, her mind fracturing under the sheer impossibility of what she was seeing.
It was Marcus. Her biological father. The man she had wept over, the man who had supposedly perished in a fiery private plane crash over the Atlantic ten years ago.
He wasn't dead. He walked into the room with a confident, booming laugh, completely ignoring the body of Robert as he stepped over it.
"Magnificent performance, Chloe," Marcus praised, walking over to gently pat the young woman's cheek as if she were a loyal pet. He looked down at his trembling daughter with a cold, aristocratic amusement. "You always were a stubborn girl, Diana. Just like your mother."
"Dad... how?" Diana choked out, her voice a fragile, broken plea. "You're alive..."
"Alive, and very busy, my dear," Marcus sneered, his voice rich with a terrifying narcissism. "Ten years ago, the federal government was closing in on my global embezzlement empire. I faked that crash to escape a life sentence, but I couldn't touch the funds without alerting Interpol. So, I hid in the shadows and played the long game. I found little Chloe here—so full of resentment, so eager to be a queen. I groomed her. I funded her education, I gave her the blueprint to introduce you to Robert, and I orchestrated this entire asset siphon. I used my own daughter as a financial mule to clean my money, and Chloe was my gullible little pawn."
Chloe’s triumphant smile instantly froze, her face turning a sickly, pale green as she realized she was never the mastermind; she was just a tool being used by an apex predator.
Marcus turned his back to them, adjusting his gold cufflinks as he signaled his armed guards. "Now that the offshore transfer is initiated, I have no use for loose ends. Kill them both," he commanded casually. "Make it look like a tragic, domestic murder-suicide between two jealous friends."
Before Chloe could raise her weapon, Marcus’s guards violently disarmed her, dragging both young women down into the penthouse’s reinforced, soundproof subterranean wine cellar. They threw them onto the stone floor, slamming the heavy, foot-thick iron-oak door shut.
Through the small, reinforced glass slit, Diana watched in absolute horror as her own biological father calmly poured a canister of heavy gasoline under the doorframe. He struck a single gold lighter, smiled a chilling, paternal smile, and tossed it into the liquid.
