Chapter 4 - The Businessman with the Blue Suit — The Bribery in Seat 2F

While Port Authority officers escorted Arthur Sterling into the private
screening room behind Gate 40, Marcus Vance pulled up the complete digital
history of Seat 2F on his encrypted iPad.
The audit revealed a horrifying pattern. Over the previous fourteen months,
Denise Carver had executed forty-seven manual "Executive Security Purges" on
high-demand cross-country routes. Every single purged passenger had been a
younger traveler, a standby employee, or someone traveling on a discounted
student fare.
And in thirty-nine of those instances, the upgraded seat had gone directly to
Arthur Sterling or his corporate associates at Sterling Crest Development.
“It wasn't just nepotism, Mr. Mercer,” Marcus whispered, leaning in so the
nearby passengers couldn't hear. “Sterling Crest was wiring monthly ‘consulting
fees’ directly into an LLC registered under Denise Carver’s maiden name. She was
running a private black-market upgrade ring out of Gate 42.”
Grant’s jaw hardened until the bone looked ready to snap. “She was selling my
airline's premium cabin from the gate podium like a street vendor.”
“Exactly,” Marcus confirmed. “And because she used the ‘Security Fraud’ override
code, the corporate audit algorithm flagged the displaced passengers as
high-risk anomalies instead of customer service failures. None of them ever got
their refunds. Most of them were banned from rebooking for ninety days.”
Emma, who had been listening to every word, felt a sick knot tighten in her
stomach. “Dad... how many people’s lives did she disrupt? How many college kids
missed interviews or families missed funerals because Denise wanted kickbacks?”
“Too many,” Grant said grimly. He turned to Marcus. “I want every single one of
those forty-seven passengers identified by tomorrow morning. Every single one
receives a full refund, an executive apology letter signed by me, five hundred
thousand bonus travel miles, and a ten-thousand-dollar settlement draft for
wrongful denial of service.”
“Consider it done, sir,” Marcus replied, immediately flagging the directive for
legal compliance.
Meanwhile, behind the frosted glass of the interrogation office down the
corridor, Arthur Sterling was furiously dialing his corporate defense attorneys.
“Do you know who I am?” Sterling yelled through the open doorway as Officer
Miller stood guard outside. “I contribute millions to the Port Authority
infrastructure fund! You cannot detain me over an airline seat!”
“Mr. Sterling,” Officer Miller said calmly, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You aren't being detained over an airline seat. You are being detained for
federal wire fraud, interstate commercial bribery, and conspiracy to falsify
aviation security manifests. I suggest you save your breath for the US District
Attorney.”
Sterling’s phone slipped from his hand, clattering against the linoleum floor.
Back at Gate 42, the atmosphere among the passengers had transformed from tense
frustration to stunned awe. Word had spread like wildfire across the terminal
that the girl in the oversized hoodie was Rachel Collins’s daughter—and that the
CEO of the airline was currently personally supervising the boarding process.
Grant walked over to the gate podium, picked up the public address microphone,
and pressed the talk button.
His voice echoed crisply across the entire concourse.
“Ladies and gentlemen of Flight 218. My name is Grant Mercer. I am the Chief
Executive Officer of Meridian Coast Airlines. What you witnessed at this gate
today was a disgraceful betrayal of everything this company was founded to stand
for.”
The concourse went dead silent.

“To every passenger who was delayed, inconvenienced, or made to feel lesser
because of the unacceptable actions of our staff, I offer my deepest personal
apology. Flight 218 will depart for Chicago in thirty minutes. And as a small
token of our accountability, every passenger on this flight—regardless of cabin
class—will fly today free of charge, with a full refund issued to your original
form of payment before we reach cruising altitude.”
A stunned cheer erupted from the economy boarding line, followed by thunderous
applause that echoed down the length of Terminal 4.
