Chapter 2 - Beneath the Crystal Water

The water erupted in a violent, crimson-tinged explosion, shattering the stagnant humidity of the Connecticut night. For a heartbeat, there was only the deafening roar of the splash and the chaotic thrashing of limbs beneath the surface.

Claire didn’t think. She didn’t calculate the depth of the pool or the cost of her silk dress. Adrenaline, a white-hot electric wire, snapped through her veins, overriding every survival instinct she possessed. She saw Lily’s legs kicking frantically, the child’s small face obscured by the darkening water, and she screamed—a raw, guttural sound that tore at her throat.

She dove.

The cold shock of the chlorinated water hit her lungs like a physical blow as she submerged, her fingers closing around the warm, slippery fabric of Lily’s bathing suit. The child was heavy, her body limp with terror. Claire kicked hard, her legs burning, and hauled the six-year-old upward, breaking the surface with a gasp that nearly choked her.

"Lily!" Claire roared, dragging the gasping girl onto the stone pool deck. "Grab my hand! Come on!"

Lily coughed, water spraying from her nose and mouth, her eyes wide and rolling back in panic. But as Claire reached for her, the air around them seemed to shatter.

Evelyn Vance was already there. Dressed in a floor-length ballgown that was now dripping wet, she was kneeling beside the gasping child, her hands hovering over Lily’s back in a gesture of frantic, maternal concern.

"You pushed her!" Claire shrieked, her voice trembling with rage and adrenaline. She grabbed Evelyn by the shoulders and shoved her away, scrambling to get to Lily. "You pushed her into the water! I saw you! You're going to kill her!"

Evelyn stumbled back, her heels clicking sharply against the flagstones. She didn't fight back. Instead, she collapsed to her knees, burying her face in her hands, and wept. The sound was immediate, visceral, and loud enough to cut through the murmurs of the stunned gala guests.

"Oh my god," Evelyn sobbed, her voice cracking. "She slipped. I swear, Marcus, she just slipped."

Marcus, his face a mask of icy fury, stepped into the fray, flanked by two burly security guards. He looked down at the gasping Lily, then up at Claire, his eyes hard as flint.

"Claire, stop!" Marcus barked, his voice cutting through the night air. "Get away from her!"

"She was drowning!" Claire screamed, her chest heaving as she hovered over her daughter, shielding her with her body. "She was drowning because of you!"

Evelyn looked up, her mascara running down her cheeks, but her eyes were wide, filled with a terrifying, practiced innocence. "I was just reaching for her," she choked out, pointing a trembling finger toward the far edge of the deck. "The wind... the petals. The wind blew them everywhere. She tripped. She was reaching for me, and I tried to catch her, but she went under."

Marcus turned his gaze to the crowd. The high-society guests, who moments ago had been sipping champagne and discussing art, were now pressing forward, their faces a mixture of horror and judgment. Mrs. Sterling, a woman Claire had known for years, stepped forward, her expression sympathetic but firm.

"It was the rose petals, Marcus," Mrs. Sterling said softly. "We saw them scattered everywhere. It was chaos. I saw Evelyn leaning over the edge, screaming for help. It was Claire who was... well, it was Claire who was attacking her."

Another guest, a man in a tuxedo, nodded vigorously. "Yes, I saw it. Evelyn was reaching out, trying to grab her hand. Claire was screaming at her, pushing her back. It looked like a complete breakdown."

The narrative had already been written by the eyes of the beholder. In the flickering light of the pool lights, Evelyn looked like the victim, and Claire looked like the unhinged ex-wife who couldn't let go.

"Secure her," Marcus ordered the security detail, his voice devoid of mercy. "Get her off my property before I call the state police."

The guards moved in, grabbing Claire’s arms. She struggled, kicking her heels against the stone, but the numbers were too great. They hauled her backward, away from Lily, away from the water.

"Marcus, listen to me!" Claire screamed, fighting against their grip. "She didn't slip! Look at the petals! Look at them!"

Marcus looked down at the stone tiles where the red rose petals had been scattered by the wind. They looked innocent enough, a chaotic red carpet leading to the pool. But as Claire was dragged toward the exit, her eyes darted frantically, searching for a weapon, for anything to prove she wasn't insane.

She was being pulled away, her vision blurring with tears of frustration. But then, her hand brushed against something hard and plastic beneath the petals.

It was small. Waterproof.

As the guards shoved her toward the side gate, Claire’s fingers curled around the device. It felt like a key. A weapon.

"Wait!" she gasped, twisting her body free for a split second. She fell to her knees in the red debris, her fingers fumbling with the plastic casing.

Marcus stopped at the gate, looking back at her with a sneer. "Get in the car, Claire."

Claire didn't answer. Her thumb found the tiny red button. She pressed play.

The poolside speakers, which had been silent since the splash, crackled to life.

A low, distorted hum of static filled the air, followed by a sound that made the blood drain from Marcus’s face.

It was Evelyn’s voice. But it wasn't the voice of a grieving wife. It was cold, detached, and terrifyingly calm.

Then, the sound of a heavy body being shoved violently against the stone tiles, followed by the distinct, sickening splash of water swallowing a scream.
