Chapter 4 - The Sister's Confession

The hallway outside Emma’s room was a corridor of white noise, a sterile tunnel lined with gurneys and the rhythmic beeping of distant monitors. Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, the adrenaline from the custody battle still buzzing in her veins. She had been rejected by her mother and betrayed by her husband in the span of an hour. She needed an ally. She needed Vanessa.
She spotted her sister near the vending machine, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, a plastic bottle of water in her hand. She looked composed, almost bored, contrasting sharply with Emma’s frantic state.
Emma pushed off the wall and marched over, her hospital gown fluttering around her legs. "Vanessa," she called out, her voice trembling. "Please. You have to come with me."
Vanessa turned, her expression softening the moment she saw Emma’s face. She straightened up, uncrossing her arms, and offered a tentative, sisterly smile. "Emma? What is it? You’re shaking."
"I can't stay in there," Emma said, grabbing Vanessa’s wrist. "They’re going to take the baby. I saw them talking to the social worker. Vanessa, you have to help me. You know I’m a good mother."
Vanessa didn’t pull away. Instead, she stepped closer, placing a warm hand on Emma’s shoulder. Her touch was gentle, almost too gentle. "I know, Emma. I know you are. It’s just... it’s a lot of stress for everyone. I’m sorry you’re going through this."
The relief washed over Emma, heavy and intoxicating. She’s on my side, Emma thought. She understands.
They slipped into a small, unused nurses' station in the corner of the hallway, away from the bustle of the nurses' lounge. The room was dim, lit only by the flickering blue light of a computer monitor. Emma slumped onto a stool, burying her face in her hands.
"Talk to me," Vanessa said, sitting on the edge of the counter, her voice low and conspiratorial. "Why don't you trust Mark? He’s been trying to help."
Emma looked up, her eyes wet. "He’s helping them, Vanessa. He’s letting them take the baby."
Vanessa sighed, a sound of genuine pity. She reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from Emma’s forehead. "Emma, look at me. Do you really think Mark would do something like that if he didn't think it was necessary?"
"He’s my husband!" Emma snapped, then immediately regretted it. "I love him. I just... I don't understand why he's so cold."
Vanessa’s smile didn't reach her eyes. It was a sad, knowing smile. "He’s stressed, Emma. He’s been under so much pressure lately. But you know what they say about stress, right? It brings out the truth."
Emma frowned, the pieces of the puzzle not quite fitting. "What do you mean?"
"About us," Vanessa said softly. She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper that felt like a knife in the quiet room. "About how you’ve always been the perfect little daughter, and I’ve always been the black sheep."
"Vanessa, don't."
"I’m not trying to be mean," Vanessa continued, ignoring her. "But you know that Mark and I have always had a... special bond. Even before you two got married. Two years ago, when we were all so stressed about your fertility issues... things got complicated. We leaned on each other."
Emma froze. The air in the small room seemed to drop ten degrees. "You slept with him."
"It happened, Emma. It was a mistake. A terrible one," Vanessa said, her voice trembling with feigned remorse. "But you know what’s worse? I think he’s finally realized that I’m the one who fits into this family. I’m the one who understands him. I’m the one who can give him the life he really wants."
"Stop it," Emma choked out, backing away. "You’re lying. You’re just saying this to hurt me."
"I’m not," Vanessa said, her tone shifting from sympathetic to coldly clinical. "I’m just telling you the reality. And the reality is, Emma... you’re broken. You’re unstable. And Mark... he’s finally waking up."
Tears streamed down Emma’s face, but the despair was turning into a cold, hard fear. She scrambled off the stool, knocking it over with a clatter. "I’m not unstable! I’m your sister!"
Vanessa stood up, towering over her. "Are you? Or are you just a vessel?"
The question hung in the stagnant air, heavy and suffocating. Vanessa took a step closer, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm whisper.
"You think this baby is yours, don't you, Emma?"
"What?"

"The IVF," Vanessa whispered, her eyes gleaming with a terrifying, twisted light. "The doctor called me yesterday. He was so apologetic. He told me the embryo transfer was... compromised. That the wrong egg was used in the lab."
Emma stared at her, her mouth opening and closing like a fish on a dock. "No. That’s impossible."
