Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The air in the recovery room smelled of lemon cleaner and sterile hope. Eleanor sat in the stiff, high-backed chair, the rhythm of her daughter’s breathing the only sound in the world. Hope was a small, perfect thing, her fingers curled like tiny claws around Eleanor’s thumb. A fierce, overwhelming surge of love and triumph washed over Eleanor. She had done it. She had survived the storm.

Outside, the world was burning, and Eleanor was the only one holding the match. She watched the muted television mounted on the wall. The ticker tape at the bottom of the screen scrolled with a blur of red numbers—Vance Industries stock plummeting, the scandal unfolding in real-time. On the screen, a reporter stood in front of the estate, but Eleanor didn't care about the spectacle. She only cared about the silence in her own heart. Marco was in jail. The man who had promised her a life had been stripped of his power. Her father, the iron-willed patriarch, was on the brink of collapse, his empire crumbling around his ears. Eleanor felt a cold, sharp clarity. She was safe. She was a mother. She had won.

The belief settled deep in her bones, heavy and absolute. The reckoning was over.

But as the minutes stretched into an hour, the sterile quiet began to tighten around her like a noose. Hope stirred, letting out a small, hungry cry. Eleanor reached for her, but the movement triggered a phantom pain in her ribs—a reminder of the violence that had brought her here. She looked at the phone on the bedside table. It had been silent for hours. No calls from Henry. No calls from Thomas. Just the endless, staticky news reports about the family she had destroyed.

A knot of unease tightened in her stomach. Was it possible that Henry was too proud to call? Or worse, that he was fighting for his life and didn't have the strength to speak to her? The thought of him suffering for his sins was a bitter pill to swallow, but she swallowed it, determined to keep her victory pure.

She picked up the phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she dialed her attorney, David. She needed to start the paperwork for the divorce. She needed to ensure Marco never touched a penny of her trust, not even a cent. She would take the settlement, she would keep the baby, and she would walk away from the wreckage of her marriage.

"Hello?" David’s voice was clipped, tired.

"Eleanor," she said, her voice stronger than she felt. "I’m ready. I want to finalize the divorce immediately. I want to make sure he has nothing left."

There was a long pause on the other end. The kind of silence that feels heavy, like the floor has dropped out from under you.

"David?" she asked, panic rising in her throat.

"Eleanor," he said, his voice dropping an octave. "You can’t finalize the divorce."

"What do you mean? He’s in jail. He assaulted me."

"He posted bail twenty minutes ago," David said. "The charges were dropped."

Eleanor stared at the phone, her mind refusing to process the words. "That’s impossible. The video. The evidence."

"The video was found destroyed," David said. "And the DA says the assault charge was... circumstantial. Without a confession, they couldn't hold him."

The room spun. The victory she had clung to for hours shattered into a million jagged pieces. Marco wasn't in jail. He wasn't broken. He was free.

"Where is he?" Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible.

"He’s not in jail," David said, his tone shifting from professional to urgent. "He’s at your house, Eleanor. He’s been waiting for you to leave the hospital. And Eleanor... he knows about the baby."

The line went dead.
