Chapter 3 - The Confession on Camera

The hum of the party—the collective roar of fifty children, the clatter of plastic plates, and the bass-heavy pop music thumping from the speakers—faded into a dull roar in Sarah’s ears. She stood near the edge of the kitchen, clutching her phone like a shield. The air smelled of stale beer, vanilla frosting, and the distinct, sharp tang of anxiety.

She had been waiting for this moment. She had been waiting for Margaret to let her guard down.

Sarah spotted Margaret in the living room, nursing a glass of red wine, her posture rigid against the floral wallpaper. She had spent the last hour watching Margaret isolate Lily, watching the way Margaret’s eyes darted toward Sarah, calculating, measuring. Sarah needed a confession. She needed to see the cracks in Margaret’s armor.

With a trembling finger, Sarah hit the record button.

She stepped out from the kitchen archway, her heart hammering against her ribs. ""Margaret,"" she said, loud enough to cut through the chatter. ""Can I talk to you for a second?""

Margaret turned slowly, her expression one of practiced indifference, though her eyes narrowed. ""I'm busy, Sarah.""

""Not here,"" Sarah insisted, gesturing toward the quiet hallway. ""Lily is in the other room. Just for a minute.""

Margaret sighed, downing the rest of her wine, and followed Sarah into the shadows of the hallway. As soon as the door clicked shut, Sarah turned, holding up her phone. ""I have had enough of your lies. I know you’re hurting Lily, and I know you’re doing it to get back at me.""

Margaret’s face hardened. ""And what are you going to do about it? Call the police? You’re the one who’s unstable here.""

""Stop it,"" Sarah shouted, her voice rising. ""Just tell me why. Why are you doing this?""

Margaret tilted her head, a cruel, amused expression spreading across her face. She looked tired, older than she had in months. ""You want to know why? Fine. I’ll tell you. Your mother cheated on your father, Sarah. She ruined his life just as he was starting to thrive. And now, you’re trying to ruin mine.""

Sarah froze, the camera still recording, the flash illuminating Margaret’s eyes. ""What?""

""Your mother cheated on your father, so you don't deserve to be with this family,"" Margaret said, her voice dropping to a chilling, melodramatic whisper. ""I’m not doing this for me. I’m doing it to save Tom from a liar.""

Sarah stared at the screen. The footage was clear. The audio was crisp. Margaret had just admitted to a motive rooted in a family secret she had never disclosed. It was the smoking gun. It was irrefutable proof of her hatred and her cruelty.

A wave of relief washed over Sarah, followed by the intoxicating power of truth. She stopped recording, her hands shaking as she tapped the screen to send the video directly to Tom.

Sent.

Ten minutes later, the hallway remained empty. Sarah checked her phone again. No reply. Just the single blue checkmark, waiting.

She checked it again. Still nothing.

Panic began to creep in, sharp and cold. She sent a text: Tom? Please. Just watch it. She just confessed.

Finally, her phone buzzed.

Where did you get this?

Sarah’s stomach dropped. I recorded it. I was in the hallway. It’s real.

Margaret just called me crying, Tom’s text read, his words devoid of his usual warmth. She says you physically shoved her to get her to say that.

Sarah stared at the screen, her breath hitching. I didn't shove her. She followed me into the hallway. I just wanted her to stop lying about Lily.

She’s hysterical, Sarah. She says you threatened her life.

Sarah’s hands flew to the video file again. She played it back, watching the grainy footage of Margaret standing in the hallway. The audio was clear, but something was gnawing at her. Margaret’s voice... it was too composed. Too calculated. It lacked the jagged edges of the woman Sarah had seen screaming at the dinner table. It sounded rehearsed, almost like an actor reciting a script. The lighting was perfect, the angles impossible to get without a tripod.

Sarah felt a cold chill run down her spine. Was it possible she had been manipulated? Was Margaret playing her again?

Tom, look at the timestamp, she typed frantically. Look at the time.

She waited for a response, but the silence stretched, suffocating.

Then, the kitchen door flew open.

Tom stood there, his face thunderous, his fists clenched at his sides. He didn't look like a man coming to listen to evidence; he looked like a man coming to destroy.

""Sarah,"" he said, his voice low and dangerous.

""Tom, wait—""

Tom cut her off, holding up his phone so the screen blazed in her face. It was a screenshot of a message from Margaret.

Sarah shoved me hard enough to knock the wind out of me. She is physically attacking me. She has a history of this. I am calling the police.

Tom’s eyes were red-rimmed, filled with a betrayal so deep it looked like physical pain. ""She’s shaking, Sarah. She’s actually shaking. She says you cornered her.""

""But the video—""

""The video looks like you threatened her!"" Tom roared, stepping closer, invading her personal space. ""You wanted a confession so badly you’d manipulate her? Is that it? You edited that? You staged it?""

""I didn't! It’s real!"" Sarah screamed, stepping back until her heels hit the wall.

Tom’s phone buzzed again. He looked at it, his expression shifting from anger to a cold, hard pity. He lowered the phone, locking eyes with her. ""She says you threatened to take Lily away from me if she didn't talk.""

The hallway suddenly felt incredibly small. The sound of the party continued behind them, a mocking reminder of the life they were losing.

""You're making me choose between my wife and my mother,"" Tom whispered, turning away. ""And right now, I don't know who to believe.""

Before Sarah could speak, before she could explain the discrepancies, Tom turned and stormed back into the party, leaving her alone in the dark hallway, the recording still playing on her phone, now sounding less like a confession and more like a crime scene."
