Chapter 1 - The Accusation

The room smelled of antiseptic and the faint, sweet scent of vanilla extract used by the cleaning staff to mask the smell of sickness. Clara lay in the hospital bed, her body a map of recent trauma, but the pain was distant, a dull throb beneath the surface. Through the open door, the hallway was a blur of moving gurneys and nurses in starched uniforms, a hive of frantic activity.
But in the small, sterile sanctuary of her room, the world had narrowed down to three things: the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor, the ache in her incision, and the weight in her arms.
Luke sat in the vinyl chair, looking exhausted but radiating a terrifying kind of peace. He leaned forward, his large hands gentle as he transferred the newborn from his arms to hers.
""She's perfect, Clara,"" he whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. His eyes were crinkled at the corners, the same way they looked when they won the fantasy football league, or when he fixed the leaky faucet on a Sunday afternoon. ""Just like we planned. Look at her nose. It’s all yours.""
Clara looked down. The baby was swaddled in a soft, pink blanket, her eyes squeezed shut, tiny fists curled near her mouth. She was beautiful—flawless skin, a dusting of downy hair, and a scent that Clara thought of as home. She let out a small, hiccupping breath, and Clara felt a tear track through the grime on her cheek.
""She's so small,"" Clara breathed, her voice raspy.
""She's strong,"" Luke said, squeezing her hand. ""She's going to be just like Eli. A good, strong boy... or a brave little girl.""
Eli was standing in the doorway.
Clara hadn't noticed him at first. The five-year-old boy was usually a whirlwind of energy, a blur of sneakers and backpacks. But today, he stood frozen in the threshold, his small frame tense, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He wasn't looking at his mother or his father. He was staring at the baby with an intensity that made the hair on Clara’s arms stand up.
""Come here, bud,"" Luke said, glancing up with a soft smile. ""Say hi to your sister.""
Eli didn't move. He took a step forward, his eyes darting between his father and the baby. The silence in the room stretched, thin and taut like a wire ready to snap.
Then, Eli screamed.
It wasn't a whine, nor a tantrum. It was a raw, guttural shriek that shattered the peaceful hospital atmosphere.
""Stop it!"" Luke stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back. ""Eli, what is wrong with you?""
""She’s not Sarah!"" Eli screamed, pointing a trembling finger at the bundle in Clara’s arms. ""She’s not my sister! I saw him! I saw Dad swapping her!""
The room went dead silent. The heart monitor beeped a frantic, staccato rhythm. Clara froze, the baby shifting in her grip.
""What are you talking about?"" Luke’s voice was tight, his face flushing a deep, angry red. He took a step toward his son, looming over him. ""You’re just jealous. You want attention. You’re a big boy now, you don't need to lie.""
""I’m not lying!"" Eli’s voice cracked, rising to a sob. ""I saw him! I was in the hallway! He had the baby in his arms and he put her in the stroller and he took the other one!""
Luke lunged. The slap was fast and hard, echoing with a sharp crack that made Clara flinch. Eli’s head snapped to the side, his cheek turning instantly red. He crumpled to the floor, his eyes wide and wet, tears cutting tracks through the dust on his face.
""I said shut up!"" Luke roared, his face contorted in a mask of rage.
""Luke, stop it!"" Clara cried out, struggling to sit up. ""He's just a child!""
""I'm trying to keep the peace in here!"" Luke turned on her, his chest heaving, but before he could say another word, the door swung open.
Nurse Camille rushed in, her uniform crisp, her expression professional but concerned. She saw Eli on the floor and immediately knelt beside him, checking his arm.
""Easy, Eli,"" she said softly, but when she looked up, her eyes locked onto Clara. ""Is everything alright? I heard shouting.""
Luke took a deep breath, smoothing down his shirt, forcing his face back into the mask of the loving husband. ""Just a little disagreement. Eli is... he's being difficult. He's jealous.""
Camille stood up, casting a wary glance at Luke, then turned her attention to the baby in Clara’s arms. ""I need to check the band, just to be sure it’s secure, before we discharge you. The printer was acting up earlier, so I want to verify the ID.""
Clara nodded, lifting the baby slightly. Camille took the tiny wrist, her fingers deft as she inspected the adhesive strip holding the plastic bracelet in place.
The room was suffocating. Eli was crying softly on the floor, his red hand rubbing his stinging cheek.
""Wait,"" Camille said, her voice dropping an octave. She pulled the band away from the baby's skin and squinted at the faceplate. The red LED light on the monitor was flickering erratically.
""It's loose,"" Camille murmured. ""The adhesive is compromised. It’s not holding.""
""Is that bad?"" Clara asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. ""Is she okay?""
""It's not supposed to be loose,"" Camille said, frowning. She pulled a penlight from her pocket and tried to shine it through the plastic of the band. ""The plastic... it’s been cut.""
""A cut?"" Luke stepped forward, his voice dangerously low. ""You think my son cut the band on his own sister?""
""I'm just telling you what I see,"" Camille said, stepping back. She looked at Eli, who was watching her with wide, unblinking eyes. ""The band is tampered with. It’s open, Clara. It’s not secured.""

Clara looked down at the baby. The plastic bracelet dangled loosely, the ID faceplate twisting in her grip. It looked wrong. It felt wrong.
Eli wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, his small chest heaving. He looked up at his father, then at the nurse, and finally, his gaze locked onto Clara. He pointed a shaking finger toward the open door and the darkened hallway beyond.
